Abstract:
NO obtained by the catalytic oxidation of NH3 in the presence of steam and containing NO2 and H2O is purified by indirect cooling to 80-92 DEG C. to remove 70-85% of the water as nitric acid of less than 1% concentration, followed by direct cooling with nitric acid of at least 15% concentration, which is recycled. The oxidation may be effected at 850-900 DEG C. using a Pt-Rh catalyst, and the gases leave at 130-150 DEG C. The recycle acid may be cooled indirectly with water and/or brine to 13-42 DEG C., and preferably has a concentration of 18-21%; part is withdrawn as product.
