Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for the continuous anionic polymerization of styrene which is economical in aspects of practicable space time yield and plant cost and has the possibility of an influence upon a desired molecular weight distribution of the polymer within a relatively wide range without carrying out multiple metering and feeding of the monomer or an initiator to form only an extremely small amount of a low-molecular weight polymer. SOLUTION: This method for producing a polystyrene comprises continuously carrying out the anionic polymerization of styrene monomer by using a catalyst based on a metal alkyl. In this case, the styrene monomer is fed to a circulating type reactor 1, arranged as a loop type closed pipe and operated at an essentially constant temperature. Furthermore, the circulating speed and residence time of a reactional mixture are set so that the conversion rate of the styrene monomer may attain at least 50% and the polymerization may be completed in a tubular reactor 2 without essentially causing any back mixing.

Abstract: Process for bulk polymerisation or solution polymerisation of vinyl monomers in an essentially back-mixing reaction apparatus designed as a forced-circulation reactor, at a temperature between 80 and 200 DEG C, characterised in that a forced-circulation reactor section, which holds at least 50% of the circulating mixture, is designed as a shell-and-tube reactor (1) and the individual tubes of the reactor are sized so as to provide the following process conditions: - the temperature difference between the axis of an individual tube and the coolant, measured in each case in the same section of the reactor, is no more than 16.5 K, or the temperature difference between the coolant entry and the reaction mixture exit (with parallel flow) is no more than approximately 20 K, - the residence time is from 5 to 20 times the circulation time, - the final viscosity of the reaction mixture is less than 750 Pas and apparatus for carrying out the process.

Abstract: A system for the continuous polymerisation of olefinically unsatd. cpds. (I) consists of a tubular reactor which discharges into an apparatus in which unreacted monomers and any oligomers produced are removed immediately after polymerisation, by evaporation under reduced pressure. On the inlet side, at least one reactor section is designed as a heat exchanger with baffles, to give a specific heat exchange surface of at least 80 m2 per m3 free reactor vol., so that the temp. difference between heat exchange medium and reaction mixt. at any point in this section can be limited to not more than 30 K. On the outlet side there is a section which is capable of largely adiabatic operation, ending in a perforated plate which is connected to a vacuum chamber. Also claimed is a process for the continuous radical polymerisation of (I) using a tubular reactor as described above, which can be operated with virtually no back-mixing. USE/ADVANTAGE - Provides a pure (unstirred) tubular reactor system which enables the continuous bulk or soln. (co)polymerisation of (I) (e.g. acrylic esters, vinyl cpds. etc.) under conditions of optimum temp. control and minimal back-mixing, to give homogeneous prods. (no "fish eyes" etc.) with high space-time yields.

Abstract: Continuous radical bulk polymerisation of vinyl monomers opt. contg. small amts. of solvent and/or initiator is such that: (a) the starting mixt. is fed to a stirred or circulating reactor (2) where it is converted to a polymer content of 45-65 (esp. 50-60) wt.% before being passed to an adiabatically operated tubular reactor (5) in which an approx. plug flow dominates, the polymer content being increased to 65-90 (esp. 70-85) wt.% in this reactor (5), with the monomer fraction at outlet (6) being at least 10 wt.%; and (b) the polymer prodn. in stirred reactor (2) is at least 1.5 times that in tubular reactor (5) and the polymer soln. leaving reactor (5) is degassed without further reaction. ADVANTAGE - Monomers such as styrene can be polymerised to high conversions with a high space-time yield.
