Abstract: The novel features in bulk or soln. polymerisation (esp. styrene/acrylonitrile copolymer mfr.) involving feed of the reaction components to a recycle reactor are that: (a) the reactor has at least one tubular bundle reactor (1) with straight or upright tubes sprinkled with a fluid heat-exchange medium; and (b) each tubular bundle reactor (1) consists of at least two tubular bundle heat exchangers (1A, 1B) linked to each other via at least one intermediate mixing zone, pref. a static mixer (12). Abstract: This method controls reaction temp. in closed loop processes, esp. in recirculation reactors used for mass polymerisation. Variation in the velocity of the reaction stream in the reactor (3) is in accordance with the reaction temp.. Pref. as the reaction temp. departs positively from the desired value, the reaction stream velocity is increased, and vice versa. The recirculation is driven by a variable-speed transport device (4). A pump, pref. a gear pump, is used.

Abstract: The invention relates to a continuous method for producing slightly gelified diene rubber, through anionic polymerisation or copolymerisation of a diene and, optionally, of a vinyl aromatic compound, in a tubular reactor. The method is characterised in that the reaction is performed at a pressure greater than the atmospheric pressure, in a hydraulically filled closed loop reactor (recirculation reactor) composed of tubular reactor members, and in that the method parameters are selected so that the concentration in diene monomers in the reaction mixture in a spatial medium is lower than 10 % wt.

Abstract: The invention concerns methyl-methacrylate polymers with an heterogeneity of 1.0 to 1.2. Said polymers are obtained continuously by polymerization of monomers consisting of no less than 90 % by weight methyl-methacrylate in a recycle reactor, which has preferably at least a tubular reactor or a multitube-flow reactor, avoiding unwarranted wall deposits. Said polymers are produced in such a way that temperature during polymerization stands at 135-150 DEG C, the recycle relation is bigger than 20 when divided by the number of chargings per circulation loop, the mean effective axial circulation is faster than 5 cm/s, a polymerization initiator having a batch half change value of 3 to 10 min. is used, and the inflow concentration of the initiator is set in such a way that by a mean residence time of 1.3 to 2.5 hours a polymer rupture of 0.50 to 0.70 at the output of the reactor is achieved. Preforms having very good optical properties can be produced with the homogeneous polymers.

Abstract: The invention concerns a process for continuously producing impact-resistant modified thermoplastic moulding compounds which contain a rubber-elastic soft phase dispersed in a vinylaromatic hard matrix. In a first reaction zone the rubber necessary for forming the soft phase is polymerized anionically in solution substantially without re-mixing until the reaction is complete. The rubber is fed, directly or after the addition of a breaking or coupling agent, to a second reaction zone in which it is polymerized until the phases are inverted with the addition of an amount of vinylaromatic monomer sufficient for phase inversion and a further anionic initiator. In a third reaction zone polymerization is terminated anionically with as many vinylaromatic monomers as are required to form the impact-resistant modified thermoplastic moulding compound.

Abstract: The production of expandable polystyrene beads (EPS) with a low internal water content is by (i) polymerisation of styrene in aqueous suspension in presence of blowing agents, then (ii) separation of the aqueous phase to give beads containing the blowing agent, with a water content of up to 5 wt%. This water is then removed by extracting the beads for 1-8 hrs. at 10-60 deg C with an organic liquid (I) with a b.pt. of 20-90 deg C which is a non-solvent for polystyrene (PS).
