Abstract: Mixts. of new 1,1-dimethyl-octalin derivs. having formula (I) (where one of the R gps. is H or lower alkyl and the other R is one of functional gps.-CH0, -COOMe, -COOEt, -COOC3H7, -CO-Me or -CN) are used as perfume materials. Mixts. of (I) and (II) are prepd. by a Diels-Alder reaction of a diene having formula (III) (where the dotted lines indicate the possible positions of the 2nd double bond in the diene) with an olefin having formula R-CH=CH-R (IV). (III) can be prepd. by converting dehydrolinalool to 3,3-dimethyl-1-acetyl-1 cyclohexane, reaction with MeMgCl and dehydration of the Grignard adduct obtd. e.g. by heating with adipic acid. The cpds. are used for preparing dil. or conc. perfumes and for scenting soaps, detergents and cleaners, cosmetics and waxes. (I) have wooden-, e.g. sandalwood-, vetive- or cedarwood fragrance notes, cling well and are easily prepd..

Abstract: 2-(1-methyl-eth-1-en-1-yl)-,2-(1-methyl-prop-1-en-1-yl)-, 2-(eth-1-en-1-yl)- and 2-(prop-1-en-1-yl)-4-methyl-2,3-dihydro-6H-pyrans substituted in the 2-position of the side chain by hydroxymethyl, acyloxymethyl, alkoxycarbonylmethyl, halomethyl or formyl. The novel 4-methyl-2,3-dihydro-6H-pyrans are obtained by reaction of 3-methyl-but-3-en-1-ol with an appropriately substituted unsaturated aldehyde in the presence of an acid catalyst. The products possess very interesting organoleptic properties.

Abstract: Trimethyl-p-benzoquinone of the formula I (I) is prepared by a process wherein A. 2,5,6-trimethylcyclohex-2-en-1-one or 2,3,6-trimethylcyclohex-2-en-1-one is reacted with air or oxygen at from 0 DEG to 150 DEG C. in a virtually anhydrous low molecular weight alkanol in the presence of a catalytic amount of copper(I) oxide or copper(II) oxide and in the presence of from 1 to 10 moles of a hydrogen halide gas per mole of trimethylcyclohexenone, and thereafter B. the reaction mixture, which essentially contains 2,3,6-trimethylphenol and/or 4-halo-2,3,6-trimethylphenol, is mixed with an alkali metal alcoholate in an amount such that a sample, when moistened with water, has a pH of from 3 to 6, and is then reacted with air, pure oxygen or tert.-butyl hydroperoxide at from 0 DEG to 150 DEG C., or wherein from 1 to 10 mole equivalents of a hydrogen halide gas per mole of substrate to be reacted are passed into a mixture containing a virtually anhydrous low molecular weight alkanol and a catalytic amount of copper(I) oxide or copper(II) oxide at from 0 DEG to 30 DEG C., an alkali metal alcoholate is added in an amount such that a sample, when moistened with water, has a pH of from 3 to 6, about one mole equivalent of 2,3,6-trimethylphenol is added and the mixture is then reacted with air, oxygen or tert.-butyl peroxide at from 0 DEG to 150 DEG C. Trimethyl-p-benzoquinone is an important intermediate for the synthesis of vitamin E.

Abstract: A process for the preparation of resorcinol derivatives of the general formula I (I) where R1 is carbalkoxy, nitrile, alkyl or H and R2 to R5 are H or lower alkyl, by reacting the corresponding cyclohexane-1,3-dione (II) with oxygen or an oxygen-containing gas in the presence of a catalytic amount of a copper compound and of from 1 to 10 moles of a hydrogen halide, or from 0.5 to 5 moles of thionyl chloride per mole of II, in an alkanol having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms, tetrahydrofuran or methyl tert.-butyl ether as the solvent, at from 0 DEG to 150 C., without the addition of a significant amount of water to the reaction mixture. Some of the resorcinol derivatives prepared are useful scents with fragrance notes of the character of the odoriferous substance of natural oak moss.

Abstract: Perfume compositions containing p-tert.-butoxy- and/or p-tert.-amyloxybenzaldehyde as perfume component besides other odoriferous substances, as well as the use of these compounds in place of alpha -methyl-p-tert.-butyl- or alpha -methyl-p-isopropyldihydrocinnamaldehyde. The said p-tert.-alkoxybenzaldehydes are scents with the desired sweet-flowery notes which have recently become very advantageously available industrially by electrochemical oxidation of p-tert.-alkoxytoluene in the presence of an alcohol and subsequent acetal cleavage.
