Abstract: Catalysts for ethylene oxide prepn. from ethylene and O2 comprise Ag and alkali metals or their cpds. deposited on a support. The catalysts contain (a) 0.1-2 atom % Na and (b) either 0.05-0.35 atom % K, 0.003-0.25 atom % Rb, 0.0005-0.2 atom % Cs or a corresp. amt. of a mixt. thereof. All percentages are based on the Ag content. The Ag content is pref. 2-12 (esp. 5-10) wt.% based on the wt. of the catalyst. The catalysts are pref. prepd. by impregnating the support with an aq. soln. of an Ag complex salt (e.g. an Ag-amine carboxylate) and suitable alkali metal cpds. (e.g. hydroxides), steaming the resulting composite until the Ag cpd. decomposes, and calcining the product at 100-400 degrees C to constant wt. Other standard methods can also be used. The catalysts have higher activity and selectivity than conventional Ag catalysts promoted with alkali(ne earth) metals, and/or have a longer life.

Abstract: Ethylene oxide is obtained from ethylene and oxygen at elevated temperature in contact with silver which has been applied to an inert carrier, wherein the catalyst used is obtained by application of a reducible silver compound to an inert carrier and reduction of the silver compound, the silver layer containing a compound of a metal of group II of the Periodic System in an amount of 0.5 to 12 atom per cent of metal with reference to silver and a compound of aluminium and/or boron in an amount of 0.1 to 4 atom per cent with reference to silver. The reducible silver compound may be silver oxalate, formate or acetate or silver oxide and suitable carriers are silver, aluminium oxide, quartz, sodium aluminium silicate corundum, graphite, silicon carbide and pumice. The compound of the Group II metal is preferably an alkaline earth metal compound, e.g. alkaline earth metal salts of organic acids such as barium lactate, calcium acetate, barium formate and strontium oxalate; cadmium salts, e.g. cadmium acetate, may also be employed. Suitable aluminium compounds are acid-soluble aluminium oxide, aluminates, e.g. barium aluminate, aluminium salts of carboxylic acids, e.g. aluminium acetate, aminoacetate, lactate, oxalate and formate, and aluminium salts of inorganic acids, e.g. aluminium nitrate. The boron compound may be a borate, e.g. calcium tetraborate, barium borate or silver borate, or boric acid. The reaction is suitably effected at 200-280 DEG C. at atmospheric or superatmospheric pressure.ALSO:A catalyst is obtained by applying a reducible silver compound to an inert carrier followed by reduction (by conventional methods), the silver layer containing a compound of a metal of group II of the Periodic Table in an amount of 0.5 to 12 atom % of metal with reference to silver and a compound of aluminium and/or boron in an amount of 0.1 to 4 atom % of aluminium or boron with reference to silver. The active catalyst may be applied to the carrier, e.g. Ag, aluminium oxide, quartz, sodium aluminium silicate, corundum, graphite, silicon carbide or pumice, by dipping the carrier into a metal melt, by coating the carrier with a layer of silver oxide which is then reduced or by depositing the silver electrolytically on the carrier, and then impregnating the reducible silver compound with a solution or solutions of the other catalyst components. The reducible silver compound may be silver oxalate, formate or acetate, or silver oxide and the group II metal compound is preferably an alkaline earth metal derivative, e.g. alkaline earth metal salts of organic acids such as barium lactate, calcium acetate, barium formate and strontium oxalate and cadmium salts, e.g. cadmium acetate, may also be employed. Suitable aluminium compounds are acid-soluble aluminium oxide, aluminates, e.g. barium aluminate, aluminium salts of carboxylic acids such as acetic, aminoacetic, lactic, oxalic and formic, and aluminium salts of inorganic acids, e.g. aluminium nitrate. The boron compound may be a borate, e.g. calcium tetraborate, barium or silver borate, or boric acid. In example 1 a catalyst is prepared from silver oxide and barium and aluminium lactate and is coated onto ceramic balls consisting of fused aluminium oxide and aluminium silicate.
