[Also in Division C2] An apparatus for mixing gases, e.g. bromine and butadiene, in such a way as to produce turbulent flow (the Reynold number being above 2300), comprises a loop-shaped reactor 4 into which the gases are continuously introduced via nozzles 3 and 7 at such a velocity that the impulse transmitted to the gas causes it to circulate. The gases may be produced by evaporating liquids stored in tanks 1 and 5. Any liquid condensing in the bottom of the reactor may be recirculated via pump 9, condenser 10 and nozzle 8; discharge is effected through tank 11.

    Abstract: Catalysts for ethylene oxide prepn. from ethylene and O2 comprise Ag and alkali metals or their cpds. deposited on a support. The catalysts contain (a) 0.1-2 atom % Na and (b) either 0.05-0.35 atom % K, 0.003-0.25 atom % Rb, 0.0005-0.2 atom % Cs or a corresp. amt. of a mixt. thereof. All percentages are based on the Ag content. The Ag content is pref. 2-12 (esp. 5-10) wt.% based on the wt. of the catalyst. The catalysts are pref. prepd. by impregnating the support with an aq. soln. of an Ag complex salt (e.g. an Ag-amine carboxylate) and suitable alkali metal cpds. (e.g. hydroxides), steaming the resulting composite until the Ag cpd. decomposes, and calcining the product at 100-400 degrees C to constant wt. Other standard methods can also be used. The catalysts have higher activity and selectivity than conventional Ag catalysts promoted with alkali(ne earth) metals, and/or have a longer life.

    Abstract: 1,140,131. 1,4 - Dicyanobutene - (2). BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK A.G. 18 May, 1966 [19 May, 1965], No. 22063/66. Heading C2C. [Also in Division C1] 1,4 - Dicyanobutene - (2) is obtained by reacting at an elevated temperature 1,2- dibromobutene-(3) and/or 1,4-dibromobutene- (2) with at least the stoichiometric amount of HCN in the presence of a copper salt in an aqueous acid medium at a pH of - 1 to + 3 using a buffer substance which exhibits buffering action in the said pH range as an acid acceptor, the acid acceptor being present in an amount of at least 1 equivalent per mole of dibromobutene, separating the resultant 1,4-dicyanobutene-(2) from the reaction mixture, oxidizing the HBr present in the aqueous solution to elementary Br 2 , separating Br 2 and returning the aqueous solution containing the acid acceptor to the reaction. The reaction may be carried out continuously or batchwise. The acid acceptors specified are alkali metal salts or alkaline earth salts of medium strength acids. The reaction solution may contain catalysts for the reoxidation of the bromine anions. Examples are given for the production of 1,4- dicyanobutene-(2) and an apparatus is described which is suitable for carrying out the continuous process.
