Abstract: A substituted indanole of formula (I) is prepared by reacting a substituted indanone of formula (II) with a base and water in the presence of a metal or metal-oxide catalyst. A substituted indanole of formula (I) is prepared by reacting, in the presence of a catalyst comprising, on a substrate, a group VIII metal or its oxide, at 10 - 100 bar pressure and 30 - 200 [deg]C, a substituted indanone of formula (II) with a base and water. The reaction is carried out in an organic solvent, wherein up to 50 weight. % water, based on the amount of solvent, is present. The base comprises 0.1 - 1.3 mole, based on 1 mole indanone of formula (II). [Image] R1> - R7>H, halogen, 1 - 20C alkyl, 6 - 14C aryl, 1 - 10C alkoxy, 2 - 10C alkenyl, 7 - 20C arylalkyl, 7 - 20C alkylaryl, 5 - 10C aryloxy, 1 - 10C fluoroalkyl, 6 - 10C haloaryl or -SiR8>3; R8>1 - 10C alkyl; and two or more of R1> - R8> may bond to form optionally substituted rings.
