Abstract: A composition comprises a copolymer containing N-hydroxymethyl groups in free or etherified form and an acid cure catalyst which is a mixture of one or more acids having a dissociation constant of more than 10-2 and one or more acids having a dissociation constant of 10-5 to 10-2. The amides are preferably acrylamide and methacrylamide and the etherifying alcohols are preferably C1-C8 alcohols, C2-C6 b -alkoxy ethanols or benzyl alcohol. The stronger acid may be perchloric acid, hydrogen bromide, hydrogen chloride, p-toluenesulphonic acid, or pyrophosphonic acid. The weaker acid may be formic or acetic acid. The exemplified polymer is a copolymer of the n-butyl ether of N - hydroxymethyl - methacrylamide, acrylic acid, butanediol monoacrylate, styrene and 2-ethylhexyl acrylate. The compositions are suitable for coating, moulding, impregnating and laminating and may contain solvents and pigments.ALSO:Steel sheet is sprayed with a solution comprising a copolymer containing N-methylol groups in free or etherified form and an acid cure catalyst which comprises a mixture of (1) an acid having a dissociation constant greater than 10-2 and (2) an acid having a dissociation constant between 10-5 and 10-2. Acids (1) are perchloric acid, hydrogen bromide, hydrogen chloride, p-toluenesulphonic acid, and pyrophosphoric acid. Acids (2) are formic or acetic acid. The exemplified polymer is a copolymer of the n-butyl ether of N-methylol methacrylamide, acrylic acid, butanediol monoacrylate, styrene and 2-ethylhexyl acrylate applied in a mixture of butanediol, toluene, xylene, and butanol. The catalyst system is a mixture of perchloric acid and acetic acid and the composition also contains titanium dioxide. The applied coating is heated to cross-link.

In a multi-stage process for preparing derivatives of amide copolymers (A) 0À9-1À2 moles of (meth)-acrylamide, 0À9-1À2 moles of paraformaldehyde (calculated as monomer), at least 0À9 moles of an (oxa)-alkanol having up to 8 carbon atoms and 0À001-0À5 moles of a tertiary aliphatic or cycloaliphatic monoamine having up to 12 carbon atoms are reacted at 50-100‹ C.; (B) then at least 101 equivalent per cent, based on said monoamine, of an α,#-ethylenically unsaturated mono- or di-basic carboxylic acid and/or an (oxa)-alkyl half-ester of such a dibasic acid having up to 9 carbon atoms in the (oxa)-alkyl radical is added and the mixture kept at 80-140‹ C.; (C) then any remainder of the said carboxylic acid or half-ester, and an (oxa)-alkyl ester of (meth)-acrylic acid having up to 20 carbon atoms in the (oxa)-alkyl radical and/or an (alkyl)-vinyl benzene having up to 12 carbon atoms and, if desired, other comonomer are added and copolymerization is carried out using an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic azo compound or an organic peroxide having a half-life of 0À1-30 hours at 85-110‹ C. as polymerization initiator. Polymerization is generally effected in an organic solvent which may be an excess of the (oxa)-alkanol used in step (A) or benzene or an alkyl benzene. In step (A) an oxygen-containing atmosphere is used and in step (B) a polymerization inhibitor is desirably included, e.g. phenothiazine, hydroquinone, methylene blue, nitrosophenol or mdinitrobenzene. The initiator used in step (C) may be azodiisobutyronitrile, azodiisobutyramide, azodicyclohexylcarbonitrile, cumene hydroperoxide, dibenzoyl peroxide, dilauroyl peroxide, t - butyl permaleate, t - butyl hydroperoxide, 2,2 - bis - (t - butyl peroxy)- butane or t-butyl perbenzoate; the initiator may be added continuously during polymerization. A regulator, e.g. t-dodecyl mercaptan, may be included in the polymerization reaction. In the examples, the following monomers are used: acrylamide, maleic acid, acrylic acid, styrene, 1,4-butane-diol monoacrylate and also, in some cases, 2-ethyl hexyl acrylate; the (oxa)-alkanol being n-butanol and the amine being N,N - dimethyl - (# - hydroxyethyl)- amine. The polymers obtained in the invention are useful in coating compositions, stoving lacquers, impregnants and adhesives.

Abstract: Stoving lacquers comprise organic solvent solutions of copolymers of (a) 30 to 87.5% by weight of a mixture of (1) 10 to 90% by weight of at least one acrylic or methacrylic acid ester of a C1- 10 alkanol and (2) 10 to 90% by weight of styrene or an alkylstyrene having 1 to 3 carbon atoms in the alkyl group or a mixture of such styrenes; (b) 10 to 45% by weight of at least one ether of N-methylol-acrylamide or -methacrylamide with an alkanol, oxaalkanol or phenylalkanol having 1 to 8 carbon atoms in the alkane radical; (c) 2 to 15% by weight of at least one mono-ester of acrylic or methacrylic acid with an alkanediol or 3-oxaalkanediol having 4 to 6 carbon atoms and exclusively terminal hydroxyl groups; (d) 0.5 to 10% by weight of acrylic and/or methacrylic acid, and optionally (e) up to 20% by weight of one or more other ethylenically unsaturated copolymerizable compounds, the sum of the percentages of components (1) and (2) being 100 and of components (a) to (e) being 100. Specified monomers (e) are acrylonitrile, esters of acrylic or methacrylic acid with alkanols having more than 10 and up to about 20 carbon atoms, acrylamide, methacrylamide, maleic acid, fumaric acid, vinyl acetate, vinyl butyrate, vinyl isobutyl ether, vinyl chloride and vinylidene chloride. Suitable organic solvents are, for example, toluene, xylene, n- or isobutanol, butanediol-1,4, ethylene glycol monomethyl ether, ethyl acetate and ethylene glycol monomethyl ether monoacetate, and mixtures of such with each other or with gasoline hydrocarbons. Optional ingredients include pigments, e.g. titanium dioxide, soluble dyes, optical brighteners, agents for promoting flow and gloss, and binders such as alkyd resins, aminoplast or phenoplast resins, e.g. formaldehydemelamine, epoxy resins, e.g. from 2,2-bis-(p-hydroxyphenyl) - propane and 1 - chloro - 2,3-epoxypropane, colophony resins, drying or non-drying oils, cellulose derivatives and other polymers. The copolymers are preferably prepared by solution polymerization of the corresponding monomers in a solvent as set forth above using as initiators, azo compounds, peroxy compounds or peroxy compounds in admixture with sulphinic acids or heavy metal compounds; regulators such as mercaptans or aldehydes may be present. In the examples, polymerization is effected with azodiisobutyronitrile or cumene hydroperoxide in the presence of t-dodecyl mercaptan, the catalyst being added during the course of polymerization. The stoving lacquers are suitable for application to metals, and may be stoved in the presence of an acidic compound in order to cure the copolymer.ALSO:Stoving lacquers comprise organic solvent solutions of copolymers of (a) 30 to 87.5% by weight of a mixture of (1) 10 to 90% by weight of at least one acrylic or methacrylic acid ester of a C1-10 alkanol and (2) 10 to 90% by weight of styrene or an alkylstyrene having 1 to 3 carbon atoms in the alkyl group or a mixture of such styrenes, (b) 10 to 45% by weight of at least one ether of N-methylolacrylamide ormethacrylamide with an alkanol, oxaalkanol or phenylalkanol having 1 to 8 carbon atoms in the alkane radical, (c) 2 to 15% by weight of at least one mono-ester of acrylic or methacrylic acid with an alkanediol or 3-oxaalkanediol having 4 to 6 carbon atoms and exclusively terminal hydroxyl groups, (d) 0.5 to 10% by weight of acrylic and/or methacrylic acid, and optionally (e) up to 20% by weight of one or more other ethylenically unsaturated copolymerisable compounds (preferably acrylonitrile), the sum of the percentages of components (1) and (2) being 100 and of components (a) to (e) being 100. Suitable organic solvents are, for example, toluene, xylene, n- or iso-butanol, butanediol-1,4, ethylene glycol monomethyl ether, ethyl acetate and ethylene glycol monomethyl ether monoacetate, and mixtures of such with each other or with gasoline hydrocarbons. The stoving lacquers are particularly suitable for application to metals, e.g. iron, aluminium and magnesium or alloys thereof, which may be in the form of sheet metal, vehicle bodies, ships, washing machines or refrigerators. They may be applied by spraying or immersion and stoved at temperatures from 120 DEG to 180 DEG C. Stoving may be effected in the presence of a hardener, which is generally an acidic compound. The stoving lacquers may contain as optional ingredients pigments, e.g. titanium dioxide, soluble dyes, optical brighteners, agents for promoting flow and gloss, and binders such as alkyd resins, aminoplast or phenoplast resins, epoxy resins, colophony resins, drying or non-drying oils, cellulose derivatives and other polymers.
