Abstract: 2-Ethylhexenal which is essentially free from water and from sodium hydroxide solution is obtained from the reaction product of n-butyraldehyde which contains sodium hydroxide solution and forms an emulsion, when the reaction product is treated with beach sand and the aqueous sodium hydroxide solution, which is separated off in the form of a layer, is removed after the treatment.
