    Abstract: In a process for withdrawing polymerization heat in continuous olefin polymerization processes in which gaseous olefins are used, which comprises supplying gaseous olefin reactant, with or without an additional non-polymerizable gaseous component under a pressure substantially higher than the pressure that prevails in the reactor, and expanding said compressed olefin (or olefin and said additional non-polymerizable component) through a throttle valve into the reactor, the reactor being arranged in a circulatory path for said olefin, whereby heat of polymerization is withdrawn by heat exchange after the olefin has left the reactor and before it is again supplied through said valve into the reactor, according to the parent Specification, the olefin is introduced into the reaction space immediately after pressure release in the form of directed jets continuously moving in the reaction space while the layer of polymer arising in powder form is simultaneously agitated by mechanical means. Apparatus suitable for carrying out the process of the invention is described and illustrated and may comprise a rotating stirrer and rotating nozzle heads secured to a common shaft the hollow base of which running in a hollow bearing provides a passage for supplying the monomer. Catalyst may be added either continuously or incrementally, and the product may be recovered by passing the material withdrawn from the reactor through a cyclone separator. The polymerization of ethylene is described in an example.

    Abstract: 907,935. Stuffing-box packing. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK A.G. Sept. 2, 1960 [Sept. 5, 1959], No. 30294/60. Class 122 (5). A plunger 1 of a gas compressor is sealed in a stuffing-box 11, Fig. 1, by packing comprising at least one U-packing shaped ring 2 of elastic material, at least one throttle ring 6, and a scraper ring 9 of resilient material, e.g. metal or rubber-elastic material, arranged axially between the ring 6 and the compression chamber, the ring 6 being composed of a metallic lipped ring 19, Fig. 2, and a rubber-elastic, e.g. plastic, lipped ring 20, the inner lips 21, 22 of which are in contact with the plunger 1 whereas clearance is provided between the outer metal lip 23 and the stuffing-box wall. Lubricant under pressure is circulated, as indicated by the arrows, in the spaces between the rings. The lubricant pressure at 17 is greater than that at 15, which is equal to the suction gas pressure, but is less than the delivery gas pressure.

    Abstract: 1,003,258. Piston and stuffing-box packing. BADISCH ANILIN & SODA-FABRIK A.G. July 4, 1962 [July 5, 1961], No. 25584/62. Headings F2B and F2T. In a multi-stage compressor comprising pistons 14, 15 and 16 having piston rings 17, 18 and 19 respectively, the high pressure piston 16 is additionally sealed by fixed U-packing rings 21, 22 (Fig. 2) housed in the high pressure cylinder 3 and the space 23 between the piston rings 19 and the first adjacent U-ring 21 is connected through a pipe 25 and a non-return valve 29 to the suction side of the high pressure cylinder 3 and the space 24 between the first and second U-rings is connected through a pipe 26 and a non-return valve 30 to the suction side of the intermediate pressure cylinder 2. The low, intermediate and high pressure cylinders 1, 2 and 3 respectively are fitted with suction valves 4 and 5, 8 and 10 and delivery valves 6 and 7, 9 and 11. Oil traps 27, 28 and cooling means 33 and 34 are provided in the pipes 25 and 26. In a modification for a twostage after-compressor, Fig. 3 (not shown), comprising coaxially opposed medium and high pressure cylinders, the high pressure and medium pressure piston rods are packed by five and three U-rings respectively and each side of the first U-ring of the high pressure rod packing is connected to the suction side of the high pressure cylinders whilst each side of the first U-ring of the medium pressure cylinder and the spaces between the second and third and between the third and fourth U-rings of the high pressure rod packing are connected to the suction side of the medium pressure cylinder. The piston rings may be made of or coated with plastic, for example, polyamides or polytetra-fluoroethylene.
