Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To electrochemically reduce an org. compd. in a high space-time yield by bringing the org. compd. into contact with a conductive substrate and a cathode having a conductive polarized layer formed formed on the substrate by deposition. SOLUTION: Adiponitrile is reduced to hexamethylenediamine in a split electrolytic cell divided into a cathode compartment and an anode compartment with a cation-exchange membrane as a separation medium. In this case, a filter plate covered with the longitudinally diagonal woven fabric of steel alloy is used sa the cathode, a Ti plate coated with a Ta-Ir mixed oxide is used as the anode, and 2% sulfuric acid is employed as the anolyte, and the mixture of methanol, water, NaOH, adiponitrile and Raney nickel as the catholyte. Raney nickel is previously deposited on a cathode and then electrolytically reduced at 30-40 deg.C and 1000A/m current density. NaOH is removed by electrolysis, and the product is separated by distillation to recover hexamethylenediamine.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable the use adequate for reaction of an organic compound by coating an electrode with a diamond layer which is poreless. SOLUTION: The material of the substrate of the electrode is preferably one or more among carbide, silicide and boride. The substrate has preferably a core material or an intermediate layer applied on the core material. The core material may be made of graphite or Ti or Mo or Au or their combination. The intermediate layer may be formed of Au or Pt or their mixture. The boron content of the diamond layer is preferably specified to 10 to 2,000 ppm, more preferably 50 to 1,000 ppm. The electrode is produced by cleaning the surface of the substrate, then seeding the surface at a high diamond nucleus forming density and coating the surface with diamond. As a result, the formation of pores in the diamond layer may be prohibited.

Abstract: This invention is for the preparation of benzaldehyde dialkyl acetals of the general formula I in which R is C1-C6-alkyl and R is C1-C6-alkyl, C1-C6 -alkoxy, halogen, cyano or carboxyalkyl having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms in the alkyl group, and n is an integer from 1 to 3 and the radicals R , in the case of n > 1, can be identical or different, by electrochemical oxidation of substituted toluene compounds of the general formula II by oxidizing a substituted toluene compound II in the presence of an alkanol R -OH and an auxiliary electrolyte (supporting electrolyte) in an electrolytic cell, depressurising the reaction solution thus obtained, outside the electrolytic cell, to a pressure which is lower than the pressure in the electrolytic cell by from 10 mbar to 10 bar, and A) in the case of discontinuous operation, separating the gas liberated during expansion from the reaction solution, recycling the reaction solution into the electrolytic cell at least once, electrolysing, depressurising and separating from the liberated gas, and finally working up to give the product, or B) in the case of continuous operation, working up part of the reaction solution to give the product, admixing the remaining part of the reaction solution with such an amount of the originally employed reaction solution as corresponds to the part drawn off, recycling into the electrolytic cell, electrolysing and depressurising.
