    Abstract: The invention relates to copolymers of ethylene which contain from 0.5 to 10 mol % of a vinylcarbinol of the formula in which R and R may be aliphatic hydrocarbon radicals having 1 to 7 carbon atoms, and optionally other comonomers in copolymerised form and which have a melt flow index of 0.1 to 20 (g/10 min), measured at 190 DEG C and 2.16 kp, a density of from 0.915 to 0.935 g/cm ) and a nonuniformity of the molecular weight distribution of less than or equal to 9. The vinylcarbinol is expediently 2-methyl-3-buten-2-ol. The copolymers are used as materials for the production of films.

    Abstract: Ionically crosslinked ethylene copolymers are prepd. by mixing (I) an ethylene copolymer, contg. 0.1-20 mols.% of alpha,beta-ethylenically unsatd. carboxylic acid or comonomer supplying COOH gps., with (II) a mixt. of (a) a metal carbonate and (b) a copolymer of ethylene and a 1-8C alkyl ester of a 3-4C alkene carboxylic acid, at above the m.pt. of the ethylene copolymers. Mixt. II contains 10-50wt.% of metal salt and 90-50% of the copolymer (b). The copolymer (b) contains 2-12 mols.% of ester, esp. a 1-8C alkyl (meth)acrylate, partic. acrylic acid esters of ethanol, n-butanol or ethylhexanol. Copolymer I is mixed with an amt. of the mixt. II contg. sufficient cations to neutralise at least 10 mols.% of the COOH gps. in I.

    Abstract: Prepn. of ionically crosslinked ethylene copolymers is claimed. Ethylene copolymers contg. 0.1-20 mol.% comonomers carrying alpha, beta-ethylenically unsatd.carboxylic acids or carboxylic gps. are homogeneously mixed with a water soluble metal salt at temp. higher than the melt. pt. of the ethylene copolymer. The melted copolymer and the aq. soln. of the metal salt are mixed in a mixing zone of a twin extruder at 140-200 deg.C followed by increasing the temp. of the mixt. up to 230 deg.C in the next. zone. The concn. of the metal salt in the aq. soln. is pref. at least 10 wt.%. The temp. of the mixing zone = 160-180 deg.C and that of the next zone = 200-225 deg.C.
