Abstract: Copolymers of 60 to 96.5% by weight of an acrylic ester of a C1- 8 alkanol, 3 to 30% by weight of acrylic acid and 0.5 to 10% by weight of N-methylol methacrylamide may be prepared by copolymerizing the monomers in aqueous media in the presence of polymerization catalysts and emulsifying agents at a pH of less than 5.5. Preferred esters are those of C2- 4 alkanols, particularly ethyl acrylate. Specified catalysts are potassium and ammonium persulphates, and specified emulsifiers are fatty acid salts, salts of alkyl sulphonic acids and alkyl sulphates and the sulphates of polyoxyalkylene derivatives of alcohols, acids, amides, imides and particularly phenols. Minor amounts of additional comonomers, e.g. methacrylic, itaconic, maleic and fumaric acids and esters, acrylonitrile, vinyl esters, vinyl and vinylidene chlorides, N-methylolacrylamide, N-methylolmaleinimide and N-methylolacryloylurea may also be present. The copolymer dispersions may be compounded with conventional ingredients and the resulting compositions used for finishing leather and textile materials. Examples describe dispersions of copolymers of acrylic and N-methylol methacrylamide with (1) ethyl acrylate compounded with casein and iron oxide; (2) isobutyl acrylate and acrylonitrile compounded with casein and lead chromate; (3) n-butyl acrylate; (4) n-butyl acrylate compounded with colloidal silicic acid, isooctylphenol/ethylene oxide condensate and ammonium nitrate; (5) ethyl acrylate compound with casein, iron oxide, sulphated castor oil and olive oil; (6) ethyl acrylate compounded with casein, iron oxide and sulphated castor oil; (7) ethyl acrylate; (8) ethyl acrylate and acrylonitrile compounded with borax, wax emulsion, carbon black, casein and sulphated castor oil; (9) ethyl acrylate, isobutyl acrylate and methyl methacrylate compounded with casein, iron oxide, sulphated castor oil and nitrocellulose; and (10) ethyl acrylate, methacrylic acid and N-methylolacrylamide compounded with casein, titanium dioxide and sulphated castor oil.ALSO:Fibrous materials, such as textile fabrics and leather, may be coated with aqueous dispersions of copolymers of 60-96,5% by weight of an acrylic ester of a C1-8 alkanol, 3-30% by weight of acrylic acid and 0,5-10% by weight of N-methylolmethacrylamide. Abstract: Sizing fibres formed of cellulose and/or polyacrylonitrile or contng. at least 30% of these fibres by deposition of an aqs. sizing bath contng. a copolymer of (a) acrylonitrile and (b) acrylic acid or sodium or ammonium acrylate contng. (a) and (b) in mol. ratio 1 : 1.5 to 1 : 7, pref. 1 : 2-1 : 6, and in 10% aqs. soln. at 20 deg.C., having viscosity 20-2000 cP. pref. 250-2000 cP. and pH 2.5-6.5, pref. 3-5.5. The polymers dissolve readily in water and the sizing baths can be produced in cold water with moderate stirring. There is no loss by evaporation during application and the polymers give similar or improved effects in smaller amounts than normal sizes, e.g. improved abrasion resistance. The baths are stable and can be kept for several weeks, and the sizes are readily removed by washing.

Abstract: Glass fibres are dyed or printed with pigments using as a binder a film-forming polymer which becomes cross-linked under the influence of a proton-acceptor and using an amino-silane or a hydrocarbon wax as an agent having hydrophobic action to promote adhesion between the binder and the glass surface, the process being carried out in the presence of a proton-acceptor, and the treated fibres being finally dried and heated. The polymers are those having groups, for example amino or hydroxy groups, which by means of proton acceptors can enter into covalent bonds with themselves or other groups. The preferred polymers are copolymers bearing hydrocarbon radicals as side chains in which a halogen atom and a hydroxyl group are attached to two adjacent carbon atoms, particularly a polymer obtained by co-polymerising 2-hydroxy-3-chloropropyl acrylate with other monomers. The proton-acceptor may be an alkali metal hydroxide, carbonate or bicarbonate, amonia or an organic amine; it may be provided as the alkali present in the glass. The glass fibres may be treated as such, mixed with other fibres or in the form of fabric. In the treatment, the various components can be applied separately or in combination. Examples illustrate the use of copper phthalocyanine, azo dyes and carbon black as the pigments.
