Abstract: A process for the production of gases containing sulphur dioxide together with the recovery of roasted residues practically free from arsenic and/or antimony and particularly lead. by the stepwise roasting of sulphidic ores containing arsenic and/or antimony and lead with free oxygen containing gases is effected in three successive fluidised layers, about one-third of the total amount of oxygen required for complete reaction with the sulphidic ores being supplied separately to each individual layer and the roaster gases being removed independently and separately from each layer, the temperature of the first layer being 550-800 DEG C. of the second layer more than 800 to 1000 DEG C., and of the third layer 550-800 DEG C. The temperature of the 1st layer is preferably 550-600 DEG C. and that of the 2nd layer 650-750 DEG C. The sulphidic ore may pass in succession through the fluidised layers under the influence of gravity. Flue dust contained in the roaster gases leaving any fluidised layer may be collected in a cyclone associated therewith and maintained at about the same temperature and passed hot together with the coarse, partially roasted ore to the next layer, the partially roasted ore preferably being introduced into the next layer through the dust outlet of the associated cyclone. By means of cooling surfaces within the individual layers, reaction heat beyond that required for maintenance of reaction temperature and to cover heat lost by radiation, together if desired with the sensible heat of the products of roasting, particularly that of the roaster gases, may be used in the production of hot water and/or steam. Specification 811,859 is referred to.

Abstract: Coarse grained roasted ore is obtained by the stagewise roasting of sulfidic iron minerals, such as pyrites or pyrrhotites, in fluidized beds with separate and independent supply of air to the individual fluidized beds and separate and independent withdrawal of the roasted gases from the individual fluidized beds. The sulfidic iron mineral is introduced with a maximum grain size of 10 mm., preferably 8 mm. The height of the fluidized bed in each of the individual fluidized beds is kept at 20-35c m., preferably 25-30 cm. and the amount of air introduced hourly into the pre-roasting stage is kept between 5,700 and 20,000 m3(S.T.P.)/m2 roasting surface and the amount of air introduced hourly in the further roasting stage or stages is kept between 2,000 and 2,700 m3(S.T.P.)/m2 roasting surface. The upper limit of the sulfur content in the preliminary roasted material is given by the atomic ratio of Fe;S equal to 1:1,20. Flotation pyrites can be roasted by the method of the invention if they are first agglomerated into pellets with a diameter up to about 10 mm. A conical fluidized bed furnace, constructed downwardly, can be used at least for the preroasting stage. Specifications 811,859, 814,707 and 886,786 are referred to.
