    Abstract: Core shell particles have a film forming shell layer and monodispersed core particle core contain a coloring agent. Core shell particles (I) whose core and shell materials can form a two phase system are characterized by a film forming shell material; a core that is essentially resistant to the conditions to induce film formation of the shell and does not swell to any great extent. The cores have a monodispersed particle size distribution and the core and shell materials have different refractive indices. The surface of the particle has deposits and/or the shell has inserts of a coloring agent. Independent claims are included for (i) a liquid or paste dispersion (II) comprising a continuous liquid phase containing dispersed particles (I), (ii) a process for the production of (II) by polymerization of core polymer particles with shell polymer monomers or prepolymers and optionally processing aids and additives in an inert liquid reaction medium such that the shell polymer is deposited onto the core particles and the liquid reaction medium contains coloring agent, (iii) a process for the production of decorative and/or protective coatings by application of the dispersion (I), optionally removing the liquid dispersant and/or diluent followed by filming the shell material and crosslinking to orient the core particles and (iv) a process for the production of an effect pigment by application of the dispersion (II) or solid composition onto a poorly adhesive substrate, removal of solvent or diluent, conversion of the shell material of (I) to form a liquid, soft or viscoelastic matrix phase; orientation of the core particles to form domains of a regular structure; hardening of the shell material to fix the structure followed by removal of the hardened film and communition to the desired particle size.
