The invention relates to the use of phenylsemicarbazones of formula (I); wherein R 1 and R 2 are each independently hydrogen, halogen, CN, C 1 - C 4 alkyl, C 1 -C 4 alkoxy, C 1 -C 4 haloalkyl or C 1 -C 4 haloalkoxy and R 3 is C 1 - C 4 alkoxy, C 1 -C 4 haloalkyl or C 1 -C 4 haloalkoxy, or agriculturally acceptable salts thereof for seed treatment and corresponding methods of seed treatment for controlling arthropod pests. The invention also relates to seed treatment formulations comprising phenylsemicarbazones of formula (I) or an agriculturally acceptable salt thereof, and to seeds treated therewith.

The invention concerns saccharine derivatives of the formula (I) in which the substituents are defined as follows: L, M hydrogen, C1-C4 alkyl, C1-C4 alkoxy, C1-C4 alkylthio, chlorine, cyano, methylsulphonyl, nitro or trifluoromethyl; Z hydrogen, C1-C4 alkyl, C3-C8 cycloalkyl, C3-C6 alkenyl, C3-C5 alkinyl, C1-C4 acyl, benzyl or phenyl, wherein any of the phenyl rings may be substituted by halogen or C1-C4 alkyl; R1 cyclopropyl, 1-methylcyclopropyl, 1-methylthiocyclopropyl or tert.-butyl. The invention also concerns salts of such compounds usually used in agriculture.

A process for controlling undesirable plant growth and for regulating plant growth consists of applying 4-methyl-5H-indeno[1,2-b]-pyridine and 1-methyl-9H-indeno[2,1-c]pyridines having formula (I), in which X, Y, Z and the residues R1 to R5 have the following meaning: R1 stands for hydrogen, alkyl, a COR6 group, in which R6 stands for alkyl; R2-R5 stand for: (a) hydrogen; (b) halogen; (c) nitro; (d) COOR6; (e) CONH¿2? and CONR?6R7¿, in which R?6 and R7¿ stand for alkyl; (f) optionally substituted alkyl; (g) alkenyl; (h) alkoxy; (i) hydroxy; (j) amino or NR6R7; (k) optionally substituted phenyl; X, Y stand for N, N?+-O- or CR8¿, in which R8 stands for hydrogen, C¿1?-C2-alkyl, COOH or COOR?6¿, with the proviso that only one nitrogen atom or N-oxide group be contained in the ring.

A process is disclosed for controlling undesirable plant growth and for regulating plant growth, by applying to the plants derivatives of azaanthraquinones and/or azaxanthones having formula (I), in which X, Y, Z and the residues R1 to R5 have the following meanings: R1 is hydrogen, methyl; R2-R5 are (a) hydrogen, (b) halogen, (c) nitro, (d) COOR6, in which R6 stands for C¿1?-C4-alkyl, (e) CONH2 and CONR?6R7¿, in which R?6 and R7¿ stand for C¿1?-C4-alkyl, (f) C1-C8-alkyl, which may bear one to three of the following substituents: halogen, hydroxy, C1-C6-alkoxy, (g) C3-C6-alkenyl, (h) C1-C4-alkoxy, (i) hydroxy, (j) amino or NR?6R7¿, (k) phenyl, which may bear one to five halogen atoms or one to three of the following substituents: nitro, C¿1?-C4-alkoxy, C1-C4-alkyl or C1-C4alkyl halide; X, Y are N, N?+-O-¿ or CH, with the proviso that only a nitrogen atom or a N-oxide group be contained in the ring; Z is oxygen, sulphur or a C = O group; A is oxygen or sulphur. L'invention concerne également les sels à usage agricole, le procédé de fabrication et l'utilisation desdits composés.
