SOLUTION: This epoxide compound contains the addition reaction oligomer of (A) a monomer diol D1 having at least two aryl groups between the hydroxy groups to (B) a diepoxide E1 which is the bis(glycidyl ether) of the component A and (C) a diepoxide E2 which is a bis(unstable hydrogen functional compound alkoxy)arylene bis(glycidyl ether). The component A preferably has the chemical formula: HO-Ar1-OH (Ar1 is naphthalene, a C-C bond or the like), and the components B and C preferably have the chemical formulas: I and II (R1 is a 1-8C alkyl or a 2-8C alkoxyalkyl; X is O, S or the like; Ar2 is naphthalene, a 1-5C alkylene or the like), respectively.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for decreasing molecular weight of an aminoplast compound, to obtain the aminoplast compound by this method, and the coating material composition containing the aminoplast compound of decreased molecular weight. SOLUTION: This aminoplast compound of decreased molecular weight is obtained by reacting (A) an aminoplast compound with a reactive substituent on the nitrogen atom in the amino group, the reactive substituent being selected from the group consisting of NH, alkylol, alkoxy, alkoxyalkyl and a mixture thereof, with (B) at least one carbamic acid ester selected from the group consisting of (substituted) primary carbamic acid ester, (substituted) secondary carbamic acid ester and a mixture thereof, at below 150 deg.C and atmospheric pressure to 20 atm in the presence of a primary or secondary alcohol, to substitute at least one equivalent to E-1/E equivalents of the amino substituent on the aminoplast by the functional group in the carbamic acid ester, thereby forming the aminoplast compound with the functional group (E is equivalent number of the reactive substituent per mol of the aminoplast compound).
Abstract:
A method for reducing the molecular weight of aminoplast compounds, the aminoplast compounds obtained thereby, and coating compositions containing said aminoplast compounds are provided. The reduced molecular weight aminoplasts are obtained by reacting (a) an aminoplast compound, having a total number (y) of reactive substituents on the amino nitrogens of the aminoplast, where y= (E x M) and E = equivalents per mole of aminoplast and M= total number of moles of aminoplast, wherein the reactive substituents are selected from the group consisting of -NH, alkylol, alkoxy, alkoxyalkyl, and mixtures thereof and (b) at least one carbamate compound selected from the group consisting of unsubstituted and substituted primary carbamate compounds, unsubstituted and substituted secondary carbamate compounds and mixtures thereof, in the presence of primary or secondary alcohols, at temperatures under 150 DEG C, and at pressures ranging between atmospheric pressure and 20 atm pressure, to form a functionalized aminoplast compound, wherein at least one and up to (y-1) of the amino substituents on the aminoplast are substituted with the carbamate functionality.
