The invention relates to a powder composition comprising particles of a) an alkali metal tungsten bronze, b) tungsten oxide, and c) tungsten metal, a method for the preparation of said powder composition, and to the use of said powder composition in form of a dispersion in a polymer material or article for heat shielding, or to increase the heat-input amount of near infrared radiation in processes selected from laser welding of plastics, NIR curing of coatings, drying of printing inks, fixing of ink toners to a substrate, heating of plastic performs, laser marking of plastics or paper.

Disclosed is a composition comprising a charged particle of volume 5 nm3 to 50 million nm3 preferably having an inorganic core of SiO2, AI2O3, and/or TiO2, or a core essentially consisting of an organic pigment and/or pigment derivative, and a counter ion which is separable from the particle and is not covalently linked to the particle, said counter ion comprising a silicon atom which is directly bound to a carbon atom. Preferably, said charged particle comprises a dye attached to said inorganic core and said counter ion comprises a (poly)siloxane moiety linked via suitable bridge members to a quaternary, positively charged, nitrogen or phosphorus atom, or to a moiety carrying an anionic functional group. Said composition may be used e.g. in the form of a homogenous dispersion in an electrophoretic display.

Disclosed are potassium cesium tungsten bronze solid solution particles of the formula KxCsyWOz, where x+y≦̸1 and 2≦̸z≦̸3. The particles are for instance micron or nano scaled particles. Also disclosed are organic or inorganic compositions comprising an organic or inorganic substrate and incorporated therein the present potassium cesium tungsten bronze solid solution particles. The substrates are for instance plastics, coatings, inks, adhesives, ceramics or glass. Also disclosed is a method for the preparation of the present potassium cesium tungsten bronze solid solution particles, which method comprises mixing a suitable tungsten source with a salt of potassium and a salt of cesium to form a powder mixture and exposing the powder mixture to a plasma torch under a reducing atmosphere. The present tungsten bronze particles are suitable NIR absorbers and heat shielding additives.
