Abstract: The present invention relates to a catalyst, or a catalyst precursor, for the direct synthesis of mixtures of methanol and dimethylether from a gas comprising CO2, CO, and H2, wherein the catalyst, or catalyst precursor, comprises copper and gallium, wherein preferably the elements copper and gallium are contained in one or more binary and/or multinary oxides. The present invention also relates to a method for the preparation of a catalyst comprising elemental copper, and one or more binary and/or multinary oxides containing copper and gallium, and preferably of a catalyst according to the present invention. The present invention also relates to the use of the inventive catalyst, or catalyst precursor in the direct synthesis of dimethylether and methanol from CO2, CO, and H2.
