    Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for the production of &bgr;-ketonitriles of the general formula (I), with R, among other things, being C-C-alkyl, C-C-alkenyl, C-C-alkinyl, C-C-cycloalkyl, C-C-cycloalkyl-C-C-alkyl, phenyl-C-C-alkyl, phenoxy-C-C-alkyl or benzyloxy-C-C-alkyl; R, among other things, being hydrogen, C-C-alkyl, C-C-alkenyl, C-C-alkinyl, C-C-cycloalkyl, C-C-cycloalkyl-C-C-alkyl, phenyl, phenyl-C-C-alkyl, phenoxy-C-C-alkyl or benzyloxy-C-C-alkyl, comprising the reaction of a nitrile of the formula (II), with R having one of the meanings described above, comprising a carboxylic acid ester of the formula (III), with R having the meanings described above, and R being C-C-alkyl, C-C-alkoxy-C-C-alkyl, C-C-cycloalkyl, C-C-cycloalkyl-C-C-alkyl, phenyl-C-C-alkyl, phenoxy-C-C-alkyl or benzyloxy-C-C-alkyl, wherein the reaction is performed in the presence of a potassium alkoxide and at least 80% of the nitrile of the formula (II) is fed to the reaction under reaction conditions.
