PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a means and method useful for preventing and/treating caries caused by bacteria other than Streptococcus mutans.SOLUTION: In the use of a microorganism belonging to the group of lactic acid bacteria or a mutant or derivative thereof, the microorganism capable of specifically binding to Streptococcus sobrinus, a microorganism belonging to the group of Lactobacillus or a mutant or derivative thereof is used for preparing an anticariogenic composition for the treatment or prevention of caries caused by the Streptococcus sobrinus.

The present invention relates to the use of a microorganism belonging to the group of lactic acid bacteria or a mutant or derivative thereof, characterized in that it is capable of specifically binding to a bacterium belonging to the group of mutans Streptococci, wherein the specific binding is (i) resistant to heat treatment; and/or (ii) resistant to protease treatment; and/or (iii) calcium-dependent; and/or (iv) formed within a pH range between 4.5 and 8.5; and/or (v) formed in the presence of saliva, for the preparation of an anticariogenic composition for the treatment or prevention of caries caused by mutans Streptococci other than Streptococcus mutans. Preferably, the specific binding can be assayed as follows: (a) growing said microorganism to stationary phase; (b) mixing said microorganism with a bacterium belonging to the group of mutans Streptococci which has been grown to stationary phase; (c) incubating the mixture obtained in step (b) under conditions allowing the formation of aggregates of said microorganism and a bacterium of the group of mutans Streptococci; and (d) detecting aggregates by the occurrence of a pellet. Another aspect of the present invention is a method of prophylaxis or treatment of caries caused by mutans Streptococci other than Streptococcus mutans, comprising administering a microorganism belonging to the group of lactic acid bacteria characterized in that said microorganism is capable of specifically binding to a bacterium belonging to the group of mutans Streptococci or a mutant, derivative, analog or fragment of said microorganism.

Uso de un microorganismo perteneciente al genero Lactobacillus o un mutante o derivado del mismo, caracterizado porque es capaz de unirse especificamente a una bacteria perteneciente al grupo de mutans Streptococci, en donde la union especifica es (i) resistente al tratamiento por calor, en donde dicho tratamiento por calor se lleva a cabo a una temperatura de mas de 95°C durante al menos 20 minutos; y (ii) resistente al tratamiento con proteasa, en donde dicho tratamiento con proteasa es un tratamiento con una proteasa seleccionada del grupo consistente de pronasa E, proteinasa K , tripsina y quimiotripsina; y (iii) dependiente del calcio; y (iv) formado dentro de un rango de pH entre 4.5 y 8.5; y (v) formado en la presencia de saliva, para la preparacion de una composicion anticariogenica para el tratamiento o prevencion de caries causada por Streptococcus sobrinus uniendose a dicho Streptococcus sobrinus, en donde dicho derivado del microorganismo es una forma inactiva de dicho microorganismo o un fragmento de dicho microorganismo, siendo inactivado dicho microorganismo termicamente o liofilizado, en donde dicho fragmento es una fraccion de membrana obtenida mediante la preparacion de una membrana y en donde dicha forma inactivada o dicho fragmento retiene la capacidad de unirse especificamente a una bacteria perteneciente al grupo de mutans Streptococci.

The present invention relates to the use of 2-methyl-6-solanylbenzoquinone methyltransferase which, when absent, brings about retarded growth and chlorotic leaves, as target for herbicides. In this context, there are provided novel nucleic acid sequences comprising SEQ ID NO:5 and SEQ ID NO:7 and corresponding functional equivalents. Moreover, the present invention relates to the use of 2-methyl-6-solanylbenzoquinone methyltransferase and its functional equivalents in a method for identifying herbicidal or growth-regulatory compounds, and to the use of the compounds identifed via the method as herbicides or growth regulators.
