A peritoneal dialysis system comprising a housing, a stepper motor housed by the housing, a pump head in operable communication with the stepper motor, a disposable unit operable with the housing and an encoder operably coupled to the stepper motor. The disposable unit includes a membrane operable with the pump head and wherein the housing and the disposable unit are configured to allow a negative pressure to be applied to the pump head and the membrane. The stepper motor is configured to move the pump head towards and away from the disposable unit. The encoder is operable with a position detection apparatus located to detect a position of the pump head relative to a reference position.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an improved dialysis system and improved dialysis. SOLUTION: More specifically, the present invention provides a system and a method for performing an automated peritoneal dialysis (APD). The system and the method perform dialysis treatment, in which dialyzate is pumped to a patient, and spent dialyzate is pumped out of the patient automatically. In addition, the system and the method can perform various dialysis treatments. Examples of the dialysis treatments to be performed with the present invention include automation of filling, dwelling, and draining of the dialyzate to and from the patient. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an improved dialysis system and method.SOLUTION: Specifically, the system and method for operating automated peritoneal dialysis (APD) are provided. The system and method provide a patient with a dialysate and operate the automated peritoneal dialysis by removing the used dialysate from the patient. Moreover, the system and method can perform various kinds of dialysis treatments. The dialysis treatments include the automation of repletion, detention and discharge of the dialysate by the patient. The dialysis system can perform the automated dialysis treatment at the night when the patient is sleeping or the like.
