Abstract: Novel films are disclosed which contain blends of ethylene-based copolymers or elastomers with polypropylene and polyethylene. Typical films have two-five layers wherein at least one layer is a blend of high density polyethylene with an ethylene-based copolymer or an elastomer and has additional layers of polypropylene blended with an ethylene-based copolymer or an elastomer.

Abstract: A sterilizable, plastic medical container has a body section formed of thin, multi layer film. The film has a first layer formed of cross-linkable plastic free or essentially free of extractable plasticizers, such as poly(ethylene vinyl acetate), and a second layer formed of a substantially non-cross-linkable plastic having a higher melting temperature than the first layer, such as high density polyethylene. The first layer is inwardly oriented in contact with the contents of the container. A port formed of the same plastic can be heat sealed to the body section. The container is irradiated to effect cross-linking, filled with fluid, and the port sealed. The fluid filled container can then be heat or steam sterilized.

Additional polypropylene-based layers can be adhered to the aforesaid layers (12, 14). A flexible pouch-type container e.g. for medical fluids can be made from two confronting pieces of film by forming heat seals (18) around their peripheries.

Abstract: Flexible container has a body section of plastics film having at least two layers, with one, inner, layer formed of a selected, crosslinkable material free of leachable plasticiser and a second outer layer formed of material which is substantially non crosslinkable and has a higher meltinq point than the first layer. The body section is irradiated to achieve a selected level of crosslinking and heat resistance in the first layer. The container is sterilised before use. Pref. inner layer is of poly(ethylene vinyl acetate) containing 10 to 35 wt.% vinylacetate units and the outler layer is of polyethylene, polypropylene or copolymers, blends, or alloys.

Abstract: Polymer blends are used in making multiple layer films suitable e.g. for packaging. In some layers of the films an elastomer or ethylene-based copolymer is blended with polypropylene, and in some layers, with polyethylene; typical films have two to five layers, in multilayer films, at least one layer (14) is a blend of polyethylene, preferably high density polyethylene, with elastomer and/or ethylene-based copolymers, and another layer (12) is polypropylene blended with elastomers and/or ethylene-based copolymers. A two layer film has two layers, one layer (12) having polypropylene and polyethylene, preferably high density polyethylene blended together. Such films can be used to fabricate packaging bags or pouches by forming heat seals (18) between confronting pieces of film; such bags or pouches are retort sterilisable and suit the packaging of medical fluids.

Abstract: This invention pertains to the use of polymer blends in making multiple layer films. In some layers, the elastomer or ethylene-based copolymer is blended with polypropylene, and in some layers, with polyethylene. Typical films have two to five layers. In multilayer films, at least one layer of a blend of polyethylene, preferably high density polyethylene, with elastomer and/or ethylene-based copolymers. Another layer is polypropylene blended with elastomers and/orethylene-based copolymers. The films may have as few as two layers, one each having polypropylene and polyethylene, preferably high density polyethylene. Additional layers may be added to the two or three layer films taught herein, for variety of purposes.
