Abstract:
An apparatus (10) for the controlled heating of fuid is provided. The apparatus (10) has a general longated heating core (16) with an exterior surfac (36) formed of a material having a high thermal cnductivity and frustoconically shaped to slidinglyreceive an assembly (14) so that the assembly enveops the surface along at least a portion of the legth of the core. The assembly (14) forms a sealed assageway (46) for generally unidirectional sheet ike flow upward along the core (16). A control sysem (20) selectively operates the heating core (16)so that the fluid, under varying flow rates, is wamed to a desired themperature without overheating, before the fluid flows from the passageway (46). 00000
Abstract:
Apparatus and methods for treating a biological fluid with light and for inactivating contaminants in biological fluid. The biological fluid is contacted with a light source (24) providing a high intensity light to the biological fluid. The biological flu id may include a quantity of a photochemical agent that, when activated by light, is operab le to cause inactivation of at least some of the contaminants. The apparatus includes a light box (10), including a retractable shutter assembly (26) that encloses the light source (24). The shutter assembly (26) includes a cylindrical tube (41) that, when raised, shields th e light source (24). In addition, cylindrical tube (28), attached to platform (36) of base assemb ly (22), encloses the light source (24) and the shutter assembly (26).

An apparatus (10) for the controlled heating of fluid comprises a general elongated electrically heating core (16) with an exterior surface (36) formed of a material having a high thermal conductivity and frustoconically shaped to slidingly receive an assembly (14) so that the assembly envelops the surface along at least a portion of the length of the core. The assembly (14) forms a sealed passageway (46) for generally unidirectional sheet-like flow upward along the core (16). A control system (20) selectively operates the heating core (16) so that the fluid, under varying flow rates, is warmed to a desired temperature without overheating, before the fluid flows from the passageway (46).
