    Abstract: Porous acrylic fibers hving moisture uptake>=2% (65% relative humidity, 21oC) and water retention > 20% were prepd. by dry spinning a soln. of acrylic polymer contg. a normally solid substance that has a higher boiling or sublimation point than the b.p. of the spinning solvent, good miscibility with the spinning solvent and washing liqs., and is a nonsolvent for the acrylic polymer, and finally washing the substance from the fleshly spun fibers. Thus, a filtered soln. of 2.47 kg 1,6-hexanediol, 13.5 kg DMF, and 4.73 kg 93.6:5.7:0.7 acrylonitrile-Me acrylate-Na methallylsulfonate copolymer was dry spun and the tow was stretched 1:3.6 times in hot water.

    Abstract: The invention relates to hygroscopic filaments and fibres of synthetic high polymers. The improved hygroscopicity compared with known synthetic fibres is due to the fact, that in a conventional dry-spun process a liquid is added to the spinning solvent which liquid has a higher boiling point than the spinning solvent used, which liquid is readily miscible both with the spinning solvent and water and which represents a non-solvent for the polymer to be spun.
