    Abstract: ION SENSITIVE COMBINATION ELECTROCHEMICAL ELECTRODES FORMED PRIMARILY OF PLASTIC WITHOUT THE USE OF GLASS WITHIN THE STRUCTURES ARE DISCLOSED. IN ONE EMBODIMENT AN ION SENSITIVE MEMBRANE SUCH AS A LAF3 CRYSTAL IS IN CONTACT WITH A COPPER TUBE CONTAINING AN ELECTROLYTE, THE COPPER TUBE BEING BONDED TO THE LAF3 CRYSTAL. THE COPPER TUBE AND LATERAL SURFACE OF THE LAF3 ARE COATED WITH A PLASTIC TO PROVIDE ELECTRICAL INSULATION AND A SEAL AGAINST LIQUID. A SECOND EMBODIMENT INCLUDES A PLASTIC TUBE SUPPORTING A SILVER CHLORIDE COATED SILVER WIRE WITH AN ELECTROLYTE BEING DISPOSED WITHIN THE TUBE IN CONTACT WITH A LAF3 CRYSTAL. A COMPRESSION RING IS FORMED ABOUT THE PLASTIC TUBE AND THE LAF3 CRYSTAL TO PROVIDE A BIASING FORCE HOLDING THE TUBE AND THE CRYSTAL IN A SEALED RELATIONSHIP. IN EACH EMBODIMENT A FLUSH SENSING SURFACE INCLUDING A LIQUID JUNCTION STRUCTURE IS PROVIDED.

    Abstract: LIQUID JUNCTION STRUCTURES FOR PLASTIC ELECTROCHEMICAL ELECTRODES AND METHODS OF MANUFACTURING THE SAME ARE DISCLOSED. ONE EMBODIMENT COMPRISES A TUBE OF PLASTIC HAVING AN OPEN END WITH AN ION SENSITIVE STRUCTURE MOUNTED THEREIN. A SMALL LONGITUDINAL CHANNEL IS FORMED IN THE TUBE WHICH EXTENDS FROM THE OPEN END PAST THE MEMBRANE TO OPEN INTO THE INTERIOR OF THE TUBE. A BUNDLE OF FIBERS IS POSITIONED IN THE CHANNEL COVERED BY A SLEEVE OF INJECTION MOLDED PLASTIC FOR COMPACTING AND RESTRAINING THE FIBERS. THE EMBODIMENT ENABLES A PLANAR SENSING SURFACE FOR A PLASTIC COMBINATION ELECTRODE. ANOTHER EMBODIMENT COMPRISES A TUBE HVING AN EXTENDED LIP PORTION SURROUNDING AN OPENING AND A SHRINK TUBE SURROUNDING THE LIP PORTION. A BUNDLE OF FIBERS IS POSITIONED IN THE OPENING; THEREAFTER THE LIP PORTION AND THE SHRINK TUBE ARE HEATED TO MELT AND CONTRACT THE LIP PORTION AND THE SHRINK TUBE RESPECTIVELY ABOUT THE FIBERS.

    Abstract: Detecting light in a capillary electrophoresis optical system includes input and output windows in the outside surface of a capillary tube. The width of the windows is not substantially greater than the bore of the tube. A fiber optic input is spaced from the capillary tube so that the light is directed to the tube and is matched to the window width. The light output from the tube is matched to be received by a fiber optic output spaced from the capillary tube. The optical light envelop from the fiber input through the tube and to the fiber output is governed by the LaGrange Invariant. The matching is effected in accordance with the Numerical Aperture of the fiber optics.

In a preferred embodiment, CEI of a sample comprising constituent parts to be separated comprises the steps of: (1) separating a first aliquot of the sample into constituent parts by capillary electrophoretic techniques, and detecting said parts; (2) admixing a second aliquot of said sample with at least one specific binding partner to a constituent of said sample, said specific binding partner capable of being substantially removed from said aliquot; (3) separating said second aliquot into constituent parts by capillary electrophoretic techniques and detecting said parts; and (4) comparing the separated constituent parts of step (3) with the separated constituent parts of step (1).
