Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a press in a paper-making machine enabling the increase of unilateral property of formed paper web and suitable especially for light class paper and to provide a method for pressing a paper web. SOLUTION: A press 20 of a paper-making machine has a pair of common presses and further 2-3 following presses after the common presses. The following presses include a wide heating nip press. In order to produce paper having unilateral property by these structure, a balance between temperature and pressure in the wide nip press is kept together with the balance between pressures and temperatures of the following presses, and this enables the control of bilateral property of a web 22. The use of a smooth high-temperature press felt serves to reduce the bilateral property of the web 22 to be formed. A dryer can select and use a press from the fifth press which uses the first dryer roll as a supporting roll, a pair of wide nip presses, the heating wide nip press which is followed by a common heating press and the heating wide nip press which uses the dryer as a supporting roll and is followed by a common non- heating press and placed at the position of the third press 52.
