    Abstract: A first air bag comprises an upper cloth and a lower cloth, the peripheries of the both cloths being connected, characterized in that the upper cloth consists of an airtight sheet obtained by weaving a composite fiber composed of a filament core and a thermoplastic polymer bonded thereto which has a melting point lower than that of said filament core, and then fusing said thermoplastic polymer so that the surface of said upper cloth has a continuous thermoplastic polymer layer. A second air bag consists of a membranous material having a breaking extension of 100% or more. A third air bag comprises an elastomer body and a shape-retaining member partially attached to the elastomer body, said member being composed of elastic fibers or threads and high-modulus fibers.

    Abstract: An air bag assembly has a base plate (108) and a rupturable pad cover (107) housing the air bag (114). The edge of the pad cover (107) is secured around the edge of the base plate (108) by bending in caulking portions (106) of the base plate periphery to trap edge projections of the pad cover. To assemble the air bag components, the base plate (108) is positioned on a support table (104) of an assembling apparatus having an upper press portion (101). The workpiece constituted by the air bag assembly components is surrounded by a cam slide apparatus (102) having press blocks (103) which, by means of sliding cam faces (103A, 105A) convert the downward force of the press portion (101) to an inward force on caulking blocks (105) surrounding the workpiece. The caulking blocks (105) act to bend the caulking portions (106) of the base plate into the securing position to hold the airbag assembly together.

    Abstract: An air bag is made with a bag body of elastomeric film (15) having a high breaking extension, and a shape-retaining member (14) which controls the shape taken by the bag when inflated. The shape-retaining member is attached over part of the surface of the bag body, and is a composite of (a) elastic fibres or threads and (b) high-modulus fibres selected from aramid (R. T. M) fibres, aromatic polyester fibres and ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene. A composite fibre may be used having the high modulus material wound round an elastic core and it may be formed, eg woven, into a tape. Alternatively a fabric having separate areas of the respective fibres may be heat-laminated over the bag body.
