    Abstract: PURPOSE:To shorten the time required for post-polymerization in plasma- initiated polymerization and to obtain an intended polymer in high yield by using a low-frequency discharge to generate a gaseous plasma. CONSTITUTION:The method comprises generating a gaseous plasma in a vapor containing a monomer to initiate the polymerization of the monomer and carrying out most of the polymerization in the absence of the plasma, the plasma generation being conducted by using a low-frequency discharge. As the discharge is used a glow discharge generating a non-equilibrium plasma. For the plasma generation, any of known techniques can be used such as the capacitive coupling method and the inductive coupling method. Preferred examples of the monomer include compounds having one ethylenic double bond, of which vinyl monomers are particularly preferred.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To attain the rapid response to an environment by adding a polymer substance with a crosslinking structure and a magnetic colloidal particle dispersed in the crosslinking structure. SOLUTION: The polymer substances are starch, agar, gelatin or casein as a natural polymer and a water-soluble polymer such as polyvinylalocohol or polyacrylamide, or copolymers such as a copolymer of isobutene and maleic anhydride, a copolymer of methylvinyl ether and maleic anhydride and their modified products classified as synthetic polymers. The magnetic colloidal particle is preferably of a grain size of 5-100 nm such as, for example Fe3 O4 , MnFe2 O4 , NiFe2 O4 or CoFe2 O4 classified as a soft magnetic particle of oxide, or Fe, Co or Ni classified as a metallic magnetic particle. The acceptable solvent is water, an aqueous solvent or an organic solvent.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To provide the polymerization process whereby even styrene or its derivative heretofore incapable of being polymerized by plasma-induced polymerization can be polymerized by performing the post polymerization in a specified temperature range, and whereby a solvent-soluble ultra-high-molecular-weight polymer having merits of the plasma-induced polymerization process such as the freedom from substances except an emulsifier, i.e., impurities such as a suspending agent, a free-radical initiator and an inorganic salt. CONSTITUTION:The process comprises starting the polymerization of at least one monomer selected between styrene and its derivative by contact with a plasma in an aqueous medium containing an emulsifier and performing the post polymerization in the absence of a plasma.
