Abstract: Apparatus and methods for detecting an incipient fire condition based on a shift in the size distribution of particles generated by a developing incipient fire condition. Particulate mass concentrations of at least two different particulate sizes are monitored and the ratio of the outputs from the sensing devices (22, 24) is processed as an indication of an incipient fire condition. In another form of the invention, the rate of change of the ratio of the outputs from the monitoring devices (22a, 24a) is processed as an indication of an incipient fire condition.
