Abstract: RETAINER FOR FISHING REEL OSCILLATOR SYSTEM This invention comprehends a means for securing the shaft of an oscillator mechanism of a fishing reel to the spool of the fishing reel so that the spool will reciprocate back and forth as the fishing line is wound thereon. The spool shaft is received in a mounting mechanism associated with the yoke strap cam follower portion of the oscillating mechanism. An undercut groove on the shaft facilitates its fastening to the yoke strap by a retainer clip having a base and two integral bifurcated legs extending from the base with exterior ends. The base and legs have common sides and a hole and a slot separate the legs with the hole near the center of the clip and the slot connecting the hole and the exterior ends. The legs and base are each longer than the diameter of the shaft with the hole having a diameter slightly larger than the diameter of the undercut groove. The slot has a width smaller than the groove. The clip has a thickness defined by the distance between the two sides slightly less the width of the groove and the clip is made from a material permitting the legs to expand outwardly sufficiently to permit positioning of the clip in the undercut groove.

Abstract: An improved drag assembly (50, Fig. 1) is provided and comprises replaceable cartridge assemblies 72 which can be precalibrated for a range of drag settings. Different cartridge assemblies are provided. The reel has a drag knob assembly 100 which supports a selectively replaceable spring 101 and is latched to the reel housing 22 with the spring bearing on the cartridge assembly. A knob 102 is used to turn the drag knob assembly for advancing or retracting the knob assembly to increase or decrease tension on the spring and to increase or decrease the drag setting for controlling tension on the line. Cartridge assemblies and springs are calibrated and rated and paired with a particular rated test line for use in particular types of fishing. A method of changing cartridge assemblies and springs is included.

Abstract: DRAG SYSTEM FOR SPINNING STYLE FISHING REEL This invention comprehends a small drag assembly that is conveniently mounted in a drag pocket in the rear part of the housing of the spinning style fishing reel. The drag assembly includes a knob mounted at the rear of the housing, the knob controlling bearing means within the pocket which contacts a disc spring in the drag assembly. The assembly further includes drive means keyed to the rear end of a spool shaft and a series of axle means whereby the shaft is freely rotatable when the knob is set to provide minimal urging force and rotation of the shaft when the knob means is advanced into the pocket to place the disc spring under compression and force the washers and drive means tightly together and against a wall of the pocket.
