    Abstract: Apparatus for power positioning and holding of an outboard marine drive includes a manual trim angle selection input signal generator. A position sensitive signal generator in the form of a Hall cell or a resistor is secured on the gimbal ring unit with a movable element set in accordance with and by the movement of the marine drive. A comparator provides a pair of output signals in accordance with the relative magnitude of the two signals and depending upon whether drive is to be raised or lowered. The output signals are similarly connected through amplifying and switch isolating circuitry to actuate an electric motor and hydraulic pump unit to raise or lower the stern drive until the position sensor and the manual input are nulled. A slight dead band maintains stable operation as the stern drive is moved to a new trim position. A fail-safe circuit prevents malfunctioning if the sensing system open circuits.

    Abstract: MULTIPLE CAPACITOR MEANS IGNITION SYSTEM A four cylinder, two-cycle internal combustion engine for an outboard motor includes a pair of energy storage power capacitors. An engine driven alternator produces a generally sine wave output voltage having onehalf cycle connected to charge one capacitor and the opposite half-cycle connected to charge the second capacitor by a suitable diode steering network. The output voltage frequency is greater than the firing frequency and a plurality of voltage cycles provide for charging of the capacitors to the desired level. A separate trigger capacitor is provided. The trigger capacitor is coupled to be charged from the main alternator through a low impedance network and additionally from the main capacitor charging circuit through a high impedance network which may also function as a safety circuit means. Each capacitor is recharged by a plurality of half-cycles and during such period of engine revolution the alternate capacitor is being finally charged and discharged. The safety circuit means provide for relatively minute or slow discharging of the capacitor means between cycles and thereby essentially fully discharge the capacitor means when the system is turned off and thus prevent maintaining of dangerously high voltages in the system at turn-off.

    Abstract: An electric trolling motor apparatus includes a solid state motor control housed within the lower propeller unit to establish a constant speed in combination with continuous monitoring to prevent damaging current levels. The forward nose cone of the unit has an inner transverse platform with cast radial ribs and with a shape to receive the slightly smaller mounting frame of a power transistor with a pair of central lateral recesses. A circuit board is formed with a corresponding configured opening. The transistor is bolted to the platform for heat transfer and supports the circuit board. The transistor is connected as a voltage regulator to maintain an essentially constant voltage and resulting speed of the motor. A self-protecting, compensating means positively reduces the current under conditions which would tend to damage the control system. A sensing amplifier has a summing input connected to individual sensors of the voltage, current and temperature parameters of the power transistor and an output summed with the speed signal to the transistor and provide an overriding motor current control. An extremely high level of any single sensed parameter effectively reduces the input to the transistor regulator. A somewhat lower sensed level of the combination of any two of the parameters similarly responds and sensing of all three parameters at a further reduced level also similarly responds to reduce the motor speed.
