There is disclosed an information transmission system provided with: a record/reproducing unit for recording compressed information obtained by compressing digital information with highly efficient encoding, on a recording medium, and reproducing the information from the recording medium; a transmitting unit for transmitting the compressed information, reproduced by the record/ reproducing unit, to a transmission channel; and a receiving unit for receiving the compressed information from the transmission channel and expanding the amount of the received compressed information to reproduce the original digital information.
