    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize communication equipment which requires only knowing the telephone number of an opposed party and which enables stable communication by processing a facsimile protocol through a modem and re-trying the communication in the case of failing in transmission of facsimile data as result of executing data communication while executing error control. SOLUTION: At the time of encoding pixel data and storing them in a RAM 103, transmission ability is set to 'unrestricted digital' by using a radio communication control part 109 and an RF 110 to try the connection. When connection by the 'unrestricted digital' is rejected, transmitting ability is changed to '3.1 kHz audio' to try connection again. In the case of succeeding in connection, facsimile communication in accordance with a T.30 protocol is executed by using a modem 107 and an ADPCM codec 108. An operator can operate facsimile equipment without caring about whether the facsimile equipment of a communication opposite party uses a data communication protocol or mounts the T.30 protocol.

SOLUTION: The network control unit NCU 12 of this communication equipment is provided with a function for performing insulation in DC and transmission in AC with the telephone line, the function for transmitting the state of the telephone line to a CPU 1 and the function for detecting the inversion of the polarity of the telephone line. Thus, the inversion of the polarity of the telephone line is detected without taking in the telephone line in DC. Further, by sharing a primary/secondary separation circuit for line monitoring, the parts required for satisfying breakdown strength between primary and secondary are reduced. The CPU 1 of the communication equipment easily detects the call signals of the telephone line by the functions of the NCU 12.
