Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make a display of assigning intensity levels performable. SOLUTION: A chiral-smectic liquid crystal having a structure (intra-plane chevron structure) shown by the graph is utilized for a liquid crystal panel. This intra-plane chevron structure consists of a first region A1 wherein a layer normal direction 4 is inclined to one side (left side in the graph) to the direction R of uniaxially aligning treatment and a second region A2 wherein the layer normal direction 4 is inclined to the other side (right side in the graph) to the direction R of the uniaxially aligning treatment. In ether region A1 or A2, liquid crystal molecules are unistable in a direction (cf. mark 6) nearly along the direction R of the uniaxially aligning treatment. As memory properties are lost in this structure, the liquid crystal panel is capable of displaying assigning intesity levels in accordance with applied voltage.

SOLUTION: This liquid crystal device is such one as to use a chiral smectic liquid crystal 21 held by a pair of substrates 41, 42 and having monostability, namely, a fluorine-contg. chiral liquid crystal compound having smectic or potentially smectic phase, along with such a chiral smectic liquid crystal composition composed exclusively of a group of compounds made up of (a) fluorochemical terminal segment having at least one methylene group and optionally having at least one in-chain ether oxygen, (b) chiral or achiral saturated hydrocarbon terminal segment, and (c) a central core segment binding the above segments thereto, and have the function to alternately apply pole-reversing drive voltage to the liquid crystal 21 by electrodes 43 provided on the substrates 41, 42 to conduct light modulation.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal element realizing a uniform alignment of liquid crystal molecules and a wide driving margin, and having a faster switching characteristic than any conventional one. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal element is provided with a first region which has a uniaxial alignment regulating function toward liquid crystal and a second region which has a weaker uniaxial alignment regulating function toward the liquid crystal than the first region or essentially has no regulating function on substrates. In the case the liquid crystal is subjected to lowering of the temperature between the substrates, a transition to a liquid crystal phase takes place from a region in contact with the first region and succeedingly, a region where the transition to the liquid crystal phase takes place continuously expands along an axial direction of the uniaxial alignment regulating function in the first region to form an aligned state. In this case the first region is formed with a photosensitive material comprising photosensitive polyimide or photosensitive polyamideimide resin having photosensitive monomers covalently bonded in its skeleton.

The chiral smectic liquid crystal composition has no cholesteric phase and the relationship between the layer spacing (dA) at the first transition point where the layer spacing starts reducing near the temperature for changing the smectic A phase into the chiral smectic C phase and the minimum value (dmin ) of the layer spacing at the second transition point where the layer spacing is reduced with decreasing temperature from the first transition point and then rechanged to an increase satisfies the formula. A chelate complex is contained in the chiral smectic liquid crystal composition.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To dramatically improve the stability of a liquid crystal element with lapse of time and to obtain a switching element having an excellent display grade, large area, fine fineness and high reliability by executing exposure by using a light source having a specific luminous flux before or after injection of liquid crystals and forming a light source so as to have a wavelength region of a specific range. SOLUTION: The exposure is executed by using the light source having the luminous flux of >=3000[1m] before or after the injection of the liquid crystals of the liquid crystal element. The light for the exposure is preferably the wavelength environment is ordinary use environment, has preferably a range of 350 to 700nm and the intensity thereof is required to be stronger than the light intensity of the ordinary use environment. More specifically, the light is >=3000[1m] and preferably >=5000[1m] in the sense of shortening the exposure time. The exposure may be in the state of contg. or not contg. the liquid crystals. UV light is included in the light source in some cases and, therefore, a UV cut filter is preferably mounted at the element when the exposure is executed in the state of contg. the liquid crystals. A high-pressure mercury lamp and xenon lamp, etc., are used for the light source.

Abstract: PURPOSE: To obtain a liquid crystal composition improved in monodomain properties by mixing liquid crystal compounds represented by specified formulas I and II with each other in a specified ratio. CONSTITUTION: This composition comprises 0.1-30wt.% each of liquid crystal compounds represented by formulas I and II (wherein R1 and R2 are each a 1-18 C alkyl; X1 , X3 and X4 are each a single bond. O or a group of formula III; X2 is a single bond, OCH2 or a group of formula III; A1 is a group of formula IV; A2 is a group of formula V; and (m) and (n) are each 3-16) and the balance of other liquid crystal compounds. This composition has chiral smectic C phase, and the tilt angle δ of the layer of the chiral smectic C phase has an adjusted value of 3-15 deg. in the temperature range of 0-60 deg.C. A liquid crystal element is prepared by forming a transparent electrode made of a thin film of e.g. SnO2 on a glass base plate, coating the electrode with a single-layer or a multi-layering insulating alignment control layer, holding two such glass base plates with a spacer to keep them distant from each other by about 0.5-20nm, pouring the liquid crystal composition into the space, curing the composition and sticking a polarizing plate to the outside surface of each glass base plate.
