Abstract: A printing apparatus 1, including: printing means 5; conveying means 13; print control means 17; and correcting means 17 configured to determine, in printing an image on each of a plurality of sheets of the same type of print medium, a correction value for correcting printing position shift between a plurality of nozzle arrays based on an inspection pattern printed on a preceding region of the print medium. The correcting means 17 subsequently corrects the printing position between the plurality of nozzle arrays in the subsequent region of the print medium by using the determined correction value. Further the correcting means corrects, in printing on a leading end region of a sheet of print medium subsequent to the preceding sheet of print medium, the printing position shift by using the correction value used in printing on the preceding sheet of print medium. There is also provided a method for correcting the printing position shift using the correction value based on an inspection pattern.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recorder and a preliminary ejection control method in which preliminary ejection can be performed efficiently while reducing contamination in the recorder. SOLUTION: The recorder comprises an ink jet recording head, a cap for receiving ink ejected from the ink ejection opening thereof, and means for ejecting ink preliminarily from the recording head into the cap at a specified time interval independently from recording operation. An ink consumption by preliminary ejection is accumulated and compared with a first threshold value every time when ink is ejected preliminarily and subsequent preliminary ink ejection is controlled to be reduced according to the comparison results. An accumulated ink consumption is compared with a second threshold value larger than the first threshold value every time when reduced ink is ejected preliminarily and operation of preliminary ejection is controlled to be prohibited according to the comparison results. After finishing recording operation, subsequent preliminary ejection is resumed according to the time when operation of preliminary ejection is prohibited and controlled to increase ink consumption of preliminary ejection.
