Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an original reader that can discriminate the presence of an image of a platen roller in a read image with high accuracy in the case of reading the image and apply proper processing to the read image when the read image includes the image of the roller. SOLUTION: In the case of reading an original on an original platen glass plate 202 by a scanner section 203, when the scanning by the scanner section 3 extends over an area of a platen roller 201 and may possibly read the image of the roller, the scanner section 3 reads the original in forward scanning and reads the roller image area in backward scanning. The original reader counts the number of black pixels and the shift amount of the read image in the backward scanning by each line to generate a pixel number histogram and a shift amount histogram. The original reader compares both the histograms with respective reference histograms to discriminate the presence of the roller image. When the roller image is recognized, the corresponding roller image area in the image read by the forward scanning is eliminated. The roller image may be discriminated by dividing the roller image area into a plurality of blocks and discriminating the image in the unit of blocks.
