    Abstract: In a system for centralized wireless broadcast of programs for local storage and playback on a receiver, an apparatus and method for providing information back to the broadcast service provider. The information is associated with signal and program quality reception at the receiver, and also the receiver user's program content consumption and receiver use patterns. The receiver records and stores events associated with program capture from a broadcast signal, program storage and memory management in the receiver, playback of the program by the user, receiver frequency and power control changes, received program quality, and other selected events of interest to the service provider. The receiver includes a recording unit that records the stored events on a removable information storage medium. The service provider distributes a removable storage medium to a user who inserts it into the recording unit, downloads the recorded events, and returns the medium to the provider for analysis.

    Abstract: Broadcast programs, e.g., for an audio information program, are divided into one or more segments and are broadcast to a receiver in packet format. The receiver captures the transmitted packets and reassembles the segments and the program for storage and subsequent output to the user. Segment quality of service is evaluated prior to output by ensuring that a minimum percent of packets per segment are usable, and by ensuring that no more than a maximum number of consecutive packets in the segment are unusable. Program quality of service is evaluated by ensuring that a minimum percent of segments per program are usable, and by determining if the first and/or last segment is usable. Different quality of service parameters are specified for particular programs. New quality of service parameters for particular programs are transmitted to the receiver.
