Abstract: A porous metal body, e.g. an electrode for an electric cell, is prepared using the following steps: preparing a foam by adding a surface active agent and a gelling agent to water and then foaming the mixture by stirring and/or blowing air through it; incorporating metal powder in the foam in order to obtain a suspension of the metal therein; shaping the foam with its suspension of metal, and adding a stabilizing agent thereto, said stabilizing agent being one which polymerizes on contact with water, thereby causing the shaped foam to set in shape; and heating the set foam to pyrolize the organic material therein and to sinter the metal. This method produces a more even and a more reliable pore size than has previously been possible.

Abstract: Air electrode has an active mass contg. a binder; carbon powder (I) with a graphitisation index above 0.2 and a specific surface (SS) of 10-60 sq.m/g.; 15-25 wt.% Ni and 15-25 wt.% C (II) with a low density. (I) is pref. obtd. by pyrolysing CO contg. 0-30 vol.% CO2 at 550-700 deg.C on an Ni or Fe-Ni catalyst; or by using the same process to pyrolise CH4 contg. 0-30 vol.% H2; or by milling graphite. The air electrode is pref. coated on one surface with 10-30 g/sq.m. of Ni providing protection, and on the other surface with a porous hydrophobic layer of PTFE. Two such electrodes are pref. used in a sec. cell with a middle Zn electrode and an outer polymer frame. This electrode resists anodic corrosion caused by the release of oxygen, and also expansion during repeated charging and discharging.

Abstract: A Zn-based negative electrode for electrochemical generator also comprising a positive electrode and a membrane, is made from a copolymer of a hydrophilic monomer, a hydrophobic monomer and a diethylenic monomer. Pref. the copolymer comprises 4-30 (wt.)% (meth)acrylic acid, 50-85% vinylpyrrolidone and 4-20% vinyl benzene. The negative electrode comprises 5-30% copolymer and 95-70% zinc (oxide). Formation of dendrites is avoided. The generator has a high output and can be produced relatively cheaply.

Abstract: A membrane for an electrochemical generator and its prepn. are claimed. The membrane separates the anode from the cathode and comprises a copolymer of a hydrophilic monomer(s), a hydrophobic monomer(s) and biethylenic monomer(s). Pref. the biethylenic monomer is divinyl benzene and is used in amt of 4-30 wt. (w.r.t.copolymer). The hydrophilic monomer (I) is (meth)acrylic acid and is used in amt. of 20-70 wt. % and the hydrophobic monomer (II) is styrene and is used in amt. of 5-50 wt. %. The membrane is impermeable to zincate ions and thus avoids formation of dendrites.
