Abstract: Membranes en acide polyacrylique à usage électrochimique. L'invention concerne une membrane semi-perméable de structure microporeuse comprenant un premier polymère et un second polymère intimement mélangés l'un à l'autre, caractérisé par le fait que le premier polymere étant choisi parmi les polymères suivants : acide polyacrylique, acide polyméthacrylique, copolymère à forte teneur en acide acrylique ou méthacrylique, mélange de ces polymères, la masse moléculaire moyenne de ces polymères étant comprise entre 10 000 et quelques millions et de préférence entre 50 000 et un million, le second polymère étant un polymère hydrosoluble. L'invention est mise en oeuvre dans les accumulateurs au plomb.

Abstract: Hydrocarbons are made as follows from the combustion gases of fuels. (i) The gases are collected, and liq. CO2 sepd.; (ii) the CO2 is converted to CO by heating electrically to a temp. of 1600-2250 deg.C while selectively removing 02, e.g. through a heated zirconia wall; (iii) some CO is catalytically reacted with water at a temp. of 800-1000 K to give H2 (and CO2, which is recycled); and (iv) the remaining CO is catalytically reacted with the H2 to give paraffins. CO2 can be collected in the heating season, and converted to a fuel when electricity is cheap. Overall, energy cost is reduced. A country with uranium but little oil can recycle its hydrocarbon fuel using nuclear electricity. The hydrocarbon is made more cheaply than from CO2 and electrolytic H2.

Abstract: Battery cell comprises a Li negative electrode, a positive active material including a solvent, esp. thionyl chloride and a binary solute consisting of a Lewis acid and an ionic cpd. or salt. Specifically, the Lewis acid is SbCl5, PCl5 or SiCl4. In one preferred embodiment, the Lewis acid is SbCl5 and the ionic cpd. is Li2O or CaO. In another embodiment, the Lewis acid is PCl5 or SiCl4 and the ionic cpd. is LiCl, Li2S, Li2O, LiF, CaO or CaS. The binary solutes are used in a concn. varying from 0.25 mole/l to saturation; the Lewis acid being fully neutralised by ionic cpd. or salt. The tension well exhibited by prior cells of this type is eliminated while the open circuit voltage is increased.

Abstract: Rechargeable electrochemical device consists of thin, adjacent, solid layers in the following sequence of (I) a catholyte providing animo forming a salt with a Li salt, and (III) a separator consisting of a Li salt and a material with a solid structure, produced by (a) dissolving the Li salt and the org. binder which is polyvinyl formal, (I) in propylene carbonate, (b) impregnating a porous solid layer with the soln, and (c) drying the impregnated layer so that the Li salt remains at least partly solvated by the solvent, and the material with the solid structure is formed by the porous layer and the binder. Combination of (I) and propylene carbonate gives excellent mechanical and electrical props.

A variant consists in forming the separator with a gel of reticulated polymer basically containing polyvinylidene fluoride and a mineral charge such as magnesia.

Abstract: A rechargeable gas electrode is produced by (a) mixing an aq. suspension of a hydrophobic agent (esp. PTFE) and carbon powder prepd. by dissocn. of CO, the PTFE and carbon being in the ratio 32.5-48:67.5-52, (b) partly eliminating water by vacuum filtration or evaporation, (c) compressing the mixt. under 40-250 kg/cm2 pressure for 10-100 min. (pref. 250 kg/cm2 for 50 min) in a grill made from an electrically conducting material (e.g. Ni) so that the latter becomes covered with the mixt., and (d) baking at 270-350 degrees C for 30-60 min (pref. 350 degrees C for 30 min). After cooling, the electrode can be directly used in an electrochemical generator, esp. one based on zinc and gas. The electrode is used to consume oxygen and discharge and release it under weak polarisation on charge. The performance of the generator, esp. in relation to voltage and output, depends, other things being equal, on the efficiency of such electrodes. Only dendritic carbon, prepd. by dissocn. of CO in presence of Ni, Fe or Co as catalyst, gives rechargeable electrodes with optimal properties. If such electrodes are subjected to alternate charge and discharge with a current of 10-20 mA/cm2, they generate a potential of 700-800 mV w.r.t the hydrogen electrode which remains constant even after up to 1500 charge-discharge cycles.
