    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stabilize the operation of the card by backing up the card, supplying a clock signal to the card, and then electrically coupling a communication link with the card when the card is inserted into a card slot of a computer system. SOLUTION: Each extension box 30 has six hot plug slots 36, which electrically connects extension cards. To one slot 34 of the extension box, a card which has a bridge chip is connected. Each hot plug slot 36 has a switch circuit 41, and consequently the slot 36 and a PCI bus are connected and disconnected. Then electric power and clock signals are supplied to the circuit card and after the electric power and clock signals are both supplied to the circuit card, the communication link is electrically coupled with the circuit card. Here, delay is so given preferably that the electric power of the circuit card becomes stable before the electric coupling and further the circuit on the circuit card synchronizes with the clock signal before the electric coupling.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To use an existing extension card slot for realizing an I2 O sub-system by including a circuit connected for constituting a second bus device so that an address can be designated by a central processing unit only through interac tion with a first bus device. SOLUTION: A first bus device and a second bus device are connected to a bus. A computer system includes a circuit connected for constituting the second bus device so that address designation can be attained by a central processing unit through the bus only through interaction with the first bus device. The circuit can mask a configuration cycle to be executed by the central processing unit. The first bus device can be an I2 O processor, and the second device can be an I2 O subordinate bus device. A computer system 10 includes a primary PCI bus 24, and is connected to bridge chips 26a and 26b.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To protect the computer system which uses a peripheral card from power failure. SOLUTION: The computer system 110 is equipped with the peripheral card 120 which is freely attached to and detached from an extension slot 118 and once the card 120 is mounted, electric power is supplied to the card 120 from a power source 112 through a protection circuit 116 and the slot 118. The protection circuit 116 monitors the voltage and current supplied to the card 120 and cuts off the power supply to the slot 118 when either one exceeds a specific range to cut off the power supply to the card 120. The protection circuit 116 is equipped with a current control means which gradually increases the current to the card 120 when the card 120 is inserted into the slot 118 so that no excessive rush current flows to the card 120. This protection circuit 116 protects the computer system, equipped with the peripheral card 120, from power failure, etc.
