Abstract: An electrodeless lamp apparatus of high efficiency employs a reflection system that allows the lamp to reabsorb light energy. The energy is redirected back to the light to provide increased system efficiency. The redirected light is of the wrong polarization and/or wrong parts of the color spectrum. The lamp efficiency is increased because of the optical pumping as well as the reuse (after some downshifting) of the returned light. In one embodiment, a projection system provides an image source or projection engine that includes the improved high efficiency lamp of the present invention.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve efficiency of a projection system lamp device. SOLUTION: Fill such as sulfur or selenium is contained inside 12 a spherical body 11 of a lamp device 10A and is excited to be a plasma state by radio frequency energy to electrodes E located outside the spherical body 11. A reflector housing 14 comprises a reflection surface 17 having a parabolic shape, etc., and is arranged to surround the spherical body 11. A screen 18 arranged to cross a pass of a light beam 19 makes a certain color of light pass through as well as reflects other light to the spherical body 11 side. A screen 21 makes light with a certain polarization angle pass through as well as reflects others. Thereby, it enables to reflect light only with a desired polarization angle of color spectrum to a direction 20 as well as recycles unrequited light. Efficiency is improved by using this lamp device as a light source of a projection system.
