Abstract:
A method for forming an optical fiber preform is provided. The method includes inserting a glass core cane into a glass sleeve such that the glass sleeve surrounds a portion of the glass core cane and such that there is a gap between the glass sleeve and the portion of the glass core cane surrounded by the glass sleeve. The method further includes depositing silica soot onto at least a portion of the glass core cane and at least a portion of the glass sleeve to form a silica soot preform, and flowing gas through the gap during processing of the silica soot preform.
Abstract:
An apparatus for making a glass sheet including a forming apparatus, a transition member, and a heat transfer device. The forming apparatus forms a glass ribbon from a supply of molten glass. The transition member encloses the glass ribbon adjacent the forming apparatus, and defines an interior space through which the glass ribbon passes. The heat transfer device is disposed within the interior space, and comprises a tube and a fin. The tube defines an exterior surface and an interior passage. The fin projects from the exterior surface. With this construction, the heat transfer device functions to extract heat radiated by the glass ribbon while minimizing the formation of flow vortices.

Abstract:
This disclosure is directed to a continuous flow ion-exchange system and process (CIOX) in which a fresh molten salt, for example KNO3, is supplied a salt inlet end of a long channeled containment vessel and the used molten salt is removed from a salt outlet end distal from the inlet end of the channel. Glass article is loaded into at least one cassette, the cassette is placed in the vessel containing the molten salt and is translated from the salt outlet end to the salt inlet end. Cassettes containing glass articles are continuously placed into the vessel at the salt outlet lend and are removed as they reach the salt inlet end.
