Abstract: A scanning tunneling microscope tip is used to direct a rapidly switched stream of electrons at a target surface by applying an electrical bias which brings the tip close to the auto-emission threshold, and then using a pulsed laser source directed at the tip to trigger emission. Applications include high time and space resolution spectroscopy, and data recording apparatus.

Abstract: The invention provides a technique for increasing the illumination intensity of probe light in a diffusely scattering sample 10 without increasing the power of the probe beam. Generally, an optical filter 30 is used which permits a collimated probe beam of light 14 to pass through to the sample, but which reflects back towards the sample much of the backscattered scattered probe light emerging at a wider range of angles. In particular embodiments a collimated laser beam is delivered to the sample through a multilayer dielectric filter covering a portion of the sample. The filter is transmissive to the laser light at normal incidence, but reflective at shallower angles of incidence characteristic of the backscattered light.

Abstract: Method and apparatus for screening objects using Raman scattering to detect the presence of predefined substances or classes of substances, which may be hazardous, toxic or explosive. Radiation, e.g. light generated by a laser 14, is supplied to an incident region 11 of an object 10. Scattered radiation is collected from a collection region 13 on the surface of the object. spaced from the incident region. The characteristics of the scattered radiation include Raman features related to the predefined substances. The Raman features allow the presence or absence of the predefined substances to be determined. The object may be a package or envelope sent via the postal services. Alternatively, the apparatus may be used to identify hazardous substances carried under clothing by a person.
