Abstract: Caprolactam is prepared by reacting a compound containing a cyclohexyl group having a tertiary carbon atom in the ring with a nitrosylating agent capable of producing NO+ ions in the reaction medium, in the presence of sulphuric acid and optionally SO3 also, the reaction being carried out in the presence of carbon tetrachloride as a heat-transfer solvent. The reactants may be those disclosed in Specifications 904,302, 904,413 and 912,034. Specification 924,098 also is referred to.
