PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light source device which increases luminance, and a projector which includes the light source device. SOLUTION: The projector includes the light source device 63; a display element; and a projector control means or the like. The light source device 63 includes a fluorescent wheel 71, having a plurality of segment regions on a transparent base material whose rotation can be controlled, and a fluorescent material layer that emits light of a predetermined wavelength band, by receiving an exciting light which is formed on at least one of the segment regions on the transparent base material, and a segment region in which no fluorescent material layer is formed as a transmission portion that transmits light; a first light source 72 which radiates the excitation light of a visible light region onto a fluorescent material; a second light source 82 which emits light of a wavelength band that is different from the fluorescent light emitted from the fluorescent material layer and the exciting light emitted from the first light source 72; a condensing optical system which condenses light emitted from the fluorescent wheel 71 and light emitted from the second light source 82 onto the same optical path; and a light source control means which controls the emission of light from the first light source 72 and the second light source 82. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To project an image that is bright as much as possible and has high color reproducibility in consideration of emission efficiency for each color depending on the combination of a light emitting element and a phosphor. SOLUTION: A light source device includes a semiconductor laser 41 for emitting blue (B) light, a color wheel 45 and motor 46 that use the B light, are set so that the generating period of B light of high emission efficiency is shorter than the generating period of other green (G) light, and generate B light and G light in time division, an LED 42 for emitting red (R) light, a projection light processing part 31' and CPU 32' for setting that the driving power in generation of B color light whose generating period is set to be short is larger than the driving power in generation of G light and controlling the semiconductor laser 41, the LED 42, the color wheel 45, and the motor 46 so that B light, G light and R light occur cyclically, input parts (11 and 12) for inputting an image signal, and projection systems (13-16, 18 and 19) for forming and projecting a light image of the color corresponding to the image signal input by the input parts (11 and 12) using RGB lights. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light source device emitting high-luminance and high-intensity light source light even when the quantity of excitation light is low, by determining the phosphor content weight concentration of a phosphor layer and the film thickness of the phosphor layer to heighten the light emission intensity. SOLUTION: The light source device includes: an excitation light source emitting blue wavelength band light; a fluorescent wheel; a light-emitting element emitting red wavelength band light; and a condensing optical system condensing light emitted from the fluorescent wheel and the light-emitting element on an incident plane of a light guide device. In the fluorescent wheel, a fluorescent light emission area having a green phosphor layer laid to emit fluorescent emission light of a green wavelength band taking light emitted from the excitation light source as excitation light and a diffusion area for converting the light emitted from the excitation light source to diffused light having weak directivity, are juxtaposed in the peripheral direction. In the green phosphor layer, the content weight concentration and the film thickness of the green phosphor to the phosphor layer are determined to heighten the light emission intensity of the fluorescent emission light emitted from the green phosphor layer. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light source unit capable of performing a stable projection without causing the heat generation of a luminescent material even when being used continuously for a prolonged time, and to provide a projector with the light source unit. SOLUTION: The projector includes a light source unit, a display element, a light guiding optical system, a projection-side optical system and a light source control means for controlling the light source unit. The light source unit includes: an excitation light-shining device for emitting excitation light; a luminescent wheel receiving the light emitted from the excitation light-shining device as the excitation light to emit a luminescent light ray of a green wavelength band; and a light source-side optical system for collecting light rays emitted from the luminescent wheel and emitted from respective light source devices onto a predetermined plane. The light source control means controls, with time sharing, the excitation light-shining device, the red light source device and the blue light source device, and controls the rotational speed of the luminescent wheel so that a period of time required for the excitation light-shining device, the red light source device and the blue light source device to be turned on once and sequentially does not become an integral multiple of a period of time required for the luminescent wheel to rotate once.
