Abstract:
A method of producing, on a physical medium, a gradient tonal representation of an image and a printhead for producing the same. An input image is divided into first and second regions. First, continuously variable intensity level, continuous tone and second, discretely variable intensity level, half-tone portions of the representation which respectively correspond to the first and second regions of the image are then printed by depositing selected quantities of ink on the first and second portions of the physical medium such that each pixel thereof has an ink intensity level corresponding to the image intensity level for the corresponding one of the pixels of the first region of the image. The ink is deposited on the second portion of the physical medium by depositing a spot of ink having a first diameter on selected ones of the pixels of the second portion, depositing a spot of ink having a second diameter on others of the pixels of the second portion and depositing no ink on still others of the pixels of the second portion such that the second portion of the representation has the desired ink intensity level. The color of the ink ejected may be black, in which case, the gradient tonal representation produced thereby shall be a gray scale representation, or other color such as yellow, cyan or magenta.
Abstract:
Method for manufacturing a sidewall actuatable, high density channel array for an ink jet printhead (10). A first surface of a main body portion (12) formed from an inactive material is conductively bonded to a first surface of a first intermediate body portion (14) formed from an active material. A plurality of parallel grooves are then machined through the first intermediate body portion (14) and part of the main body portion (12) to form a plurality of channels (18) separated by a corresponding plurality of sidewall actuators comprised of a first sidewall section formed from an inactive material and a second sidewall section formed from an active material. A top body portion (16) is then conductively mounted to the intermediate body portion.

Abstract:
A length-mode ink jet printhead which includes an active lower body portion, a series of active intermediate body portions and an inactive upper body portion which collectively define a series of generally parallel channels which extend between front and rear side surfaces of the printhead. Each channel is bounded by first and second sidewalls, each comprised of a lower body projection and an intermediate body portion conductively mounted thereto. Formed in the upper body portion are a series of ink ejection orifices, each of which extends from the top side surface to a corresponding one of the series of channels and is located midway between the front and rear side surfaces of the printhead. Mounted on the front and rear side surfaces of the printhead are acoustic pressure wave reflection interfaces for respectively reflecting forwardly and rearwardly propagating pressure waves generated in the series of channels. An orthogonally directed droplet of ink is ejected from an ink ejection orifice by imparting an acoustic pressure wave to a selected channel in communication with the ink ejection orifice.
