Abstract: The water is passed upwards through a bed of a granular material on which are fixed bacterial microorganisms which provoke the nitrification and/or dentrificiation of the water. The internal recirculation of the support, such as sand, results in rubbing whereby the excess microorganisms are sepd. and evacuated from the upper part of the bed. The process is carried out in appts. which contains at least one hydro-ejector to circulate the material. It is used to treat water for drinking. It enables regeneration of the column, ensuring good yields and avoiding blockage.

Abstract: Method for treating water in closed-circuit fish-farming systems comprises passing the water through a filter bed of solid material into which an oxygen-contg. gas is injected. This eliminates nitrogenous pollutants and replaces consumed oxygen in a single stage and, if necessary, also removes solid wastes. The flow rates of gas and water are controlled so that the pH is maintained at 5-9, esp. by stripping CO2 formed during the nitrification. Adequate purificn. is achieved in a single stage and treatment is carried out outside the fish-raising pond. Little or no fresh water needs to be supplied and stock levels 3-5 times higher than those generally used can be maintained. The filter material acts as a support for the denitrifying bacteria and the system can cope with large variations in the degree of nitrogen pollution.

Abstract: The water contg. 20 mg/l of ammonia is passed up at least one bed of granular material seeded with bacterial microorganisms. Oxygen in added to the water current before it is injected into the bed, which results in the release of oxygen bubbles throughout the filtration bed. The process is carried out using a bacterial bed of material such as sand of carbon with injection means for passing oxygen or an oxygen contg. gas into the current. The process is particularly applied to drinking water. It enables addn. of oxygen according to the ammonia content and the movement of the bubbles avoids blocking of the column, releasing excess biological mass which can be eliminated.
