    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject compound useful for a resin raw material, etc., in a high yield, by subjecting a polyhydric alcohol, an α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compound and formaldehyde to an aldol/Cannizzaro reaction in the presence of a base. SOLUTION: An aqueous solution or suspension containing (A1 ) >=10 mol% of a compound of formula I (W is an organic group: (w) is valence of OH), (A2 ) 10-70 mol % of formaldehyde and (A3 ) >=10 mol% of an alkaline (earth) metal compound is reacted with (A4 ) a compound of formula II (Z is a 1-6C alkyl; X is Z, etc.; Y is X, etc.), the residual A1 , the residual A2 and the residual A3 by continuously or periodically adding the compound, etc., to the aqueous solution or suspension so as to make the component A2 based on the component A4 constantly excessive in a reaction mixture. The reaction is carried out in the molar ratios the components A1 , A2 and A3 equivalents to the component A4 of 0.05-20. 2-15 and 1-3 respectively in a water phase at pH >=7 at 0-100 deg.C. The reaction mixture is acidified to isolate the objective compound of formula III [OV is a group of formula IV (M is CH2 OH, etc.; (n) is 1-5); (m) is 1-w].

    Abstract: In the preparation of methyl methacrylate copolymers with improved long-term UV-A transparency by copolymerisation of a monomer mixture in the presence of free-radical initiators and a sterically hindered amine, the monomer mixture comprises (a) 80-99.5 wt.% methyl methacrylate (MMA), 0-19.5 wt.% alkyl acrylate, (c) 0-10 wt.% alkyl methacrylate with more than 2 carbon (C) atoms in the alkyl group, styrene, vinyl acetate and/or monomers with 2 or more polymerisable double bonds and (d) 0.5-10 wt.% alpha -methylene- psi -butyrolactone(s) of formula (I); in which R = hydrogen (H); R , R , R , R = H, 1-7 C alkyl or halogen, in which the alkyl groups may be branched or linear, may contain nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and sulphur (S) hetero-atoms and may have O-alkyl and/or halogen substituents and/or contain carbonyl groups; and R or R with R or R may complete a 5- or 6-membered ring to form a bicyclic compound. Also claimed are acrylic 'glass' plates with improved long-term UV-A transparency, that can be obtained by bulk polymerisation of this composition.

    Abstract: Prepn. of 2-vinyl-1,3-dioxolane, comprises the following steps: (1) reaction of acrolein with ethylene glycol at less than 50 degrees C in the presence of a solid acid catalyst; (2) extraction of the reaction mixt. with an organic solvent having a b.pt. greater than 130 degrees C, in which ethylene glycol is essentially insoluble; and (3) distilln. of the aq. phase contg. ethylene glycol and the organic phase contg. the dioxolane.

    Abstract: Copolymers (CP) for the prodn. of cast glass or for moulding materials with high heat distortion temp. are obtd. by copolymerisation of (A) exo-methylene-lactone(s) of formula (I); with (B) unsatd. vinyl monomer(s) or different exo-methylene-lactones of formula (I). The claim does not include copolymers of alpha -methylene- gamma -butyrolactone with acrylonitrile, styrene, MMA or difunctional methacrylates, or copolymers of alpha -methylene- delta -valerolactone and styrene. Also claimed are (i) cast glass with low heat distortion, obtd. by bulk polymerisation of a syrup contg. (A) and (B) in an oven-type furnace; and (ii) mouldings with a high heat distortion pt., contg. copolymers (CP). In (I), n = 0 or 1; m = 0 or 1; n+m = 1 or 2; X and X are each =CH-R or two single-bonded gps. R and R ; one of the X gps. must be =CH-R and, if X is =CH-R , the sum of n+m must be 1; and R -R are each H, halogen or 1-7C alkyl (linear or branched, opt. contg. N, P or S hetero atoms and opt. substd. with alkoxy, halogen and/or carbonyl gps.), two of these R gps. may form a 5- or 6-membered ring.
