    Abstract: Reactor head for the supply (and removal) of two sets of flowing reaction materials. The head is divided principally into two superposed chambers (1,2) into which two sets of guide tubes (6,8) are passed and arranged so that tubes (6) end in chamber (1) and tubes (8) pass through the common division into chamber (2). These guide tubes fit for varying distances into the two parallel sets of reaction channels (7,9). The heads fit in a gas-tight manner over the ends of the reactor vessel (4), which incorporates the channels. The sets of reaction materials are fed into (or removed from) chamber (1) and (2) respectively.

    Abstract: The prodn. of 2-(alkoxymethyl)-acrolein cpds. of formula(I), in which R = 1-6C alkyl or 3-6C alkoxyalkyl, comprises reacting acrolein with an equimolar amt. of a source of formaldehyde (II) in presence of at least an equimolar amt. of alcohol of formula ROH (III) and a catalyst system based on a sec. amine and a mineral acid, at pH 1-7. Pref. (II) is a 1-4C prim. or sec. alcohol and (III) is polymeric formaldehyde. The reaction is carried out at 20-100 degrees C and pH 3-6.5, with a mol. ratio of (acrolein):(III) = (1:2)-(1:10). Pref. procedure comprises treating a mixt. of (III) and catalyst system with (II) and then adding acrolein at 40-100 degrees C and pH 3-6.5 in such a way that the mixt. always contains less than 20 mole% 3-alkoxy- propionaldehyde based on added acrolein. The reaction mixt. is then worked up by distn.

    Abstract: In an aluminium oxide (I) catalyst for the synthesis of methyl mercaptan containing 5-25 wt.% potassium tungstate (II) as promoter with respect to active (I), (II) is deposited in 2 portions. (I) is first coated with the first portion of (II) by impregnation in excess aqueous solution, then dried at elevated temperature. Then the second portion is applied by pore volume impregnation. The catalyst precursor is then dried at elevated temperature and calcined at 200-600 degrees C.

    Abstract: A process for the continuous production of methyl-mercaptan (I) comprises (i) reacting a mixture of methanol and hydrogen sulphide (H2S) in the vapour phase at 300-500 degrees C and 5-15 bar on an alumina-based catalyst bed and (ii) separating (I) from the gas mixture obtained by absorption and distillation, with recycling of unreacted methanol and H2S, removal of inert gas and waste water, and replacement of used methanol and H2S. The starting gas mixture is obtained by (a) compressing fresh H2S to an intermediate pressure (P1) with addition of liquid methanol, (b) adding the recycled H2S and compressing the mixture to operating pressure (P2), (c) adding more methanol in the form of vapour to give a compressed mixture with a mol ratio of (H2S):(methanol) = 1.1-3, (d) preheating the gas mixture to 150-200 degrees C, (e) heating to reaction temperature using the heat of reaction released on the catalyst and (f) reaction on the catalyst bed.
